Southland and Lakes District student businesses will fight it out for nearly $2000 in funding.

A Dragon's Den-style event will come to the Southern Institute of Technology's Invercargill campus on June 14. About 140 students from James Hargest College, Southland Girls' High School, Southland Boys' High School, Aparima College, Mt Aspiring College and Wakatipu High School will present their business ideas to a panel of judges, with $1750 in cash prizes up for grabs.

When released, some Invercargill prisoners will be able to show potential employers trade qualifications they achieved while inside.

Twelve prisoners have received a National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Certificate, the first graduates of the new trade qualification offered at Invercargill Prison.
