Study Construction at SIT

Construction students at SITSIT's Construction courses and trades programmes are second to none. With a focus on ensuring our graduates are equipped with skills the industry is looking for, our courses combine classroom learning with practical work and employer-based work experience.

The Construction workshop is part of our million dollar Trades Facility at the SIT Invercargill campus, meaning students are working in an up-to-the-minute environment with leading edge equipment. Construction programmes at our Queenstown and Christchurch campuses are similarly well-equipped, and construction pre-trade classes actually build a three bedroom transportable house, which is great work experience leading into a building apprenticeship.

Boost your chances of getting an apprenticeship, the best jobs and promotions with our part-time and full-time construction and trades courses. Build yourself a smarter future!

One year full time (3 days in class, 2 days work experience)

The Certificate in Construction course covers carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction skills.  Every class builds a house from scratch, with practical sessions being alternated with classroom learning.  Classes are 3 days per week and students are encouraged to seek work experience with an employer for the other 2 days.  This course allows students to work through a lot of the theory units required for their building apprenticeship, which should help them get through their apprenticeship faster.
