Study Travel, Tourism & Hotel Management at SIT

Looking for qualifications to begin a travel career or training in tourism and hotel management? SIT has an exciting courses which can lead to employment in the industry with hotels, airlines, travel agencies, cruise ships and airports. Our graduates are now in jobs such as flight attendants, travel agents, tour guides, hotel managers and booking agents. 

Our Hotel and Tourism Management programmes are designed to allow graduates to hit the ground running in employment. The Bachelor of Hotel Management is a business degree focused on equipping graduates with skills that are sought after by employers. Students are given every opportunity to experience the industry first hand, including an internship for the final semester of the third year. Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma courses in Hotel Management allow graduates to quickly become qualified and experienced in the hotel industry at a high level. The New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel is an ideal qualification for those looking to operate or manage a tourism business or those who wish to enter the industry.

SIT Travel programmes provide great training for your travel career. The programmes have strong ties with the House of Travel group and Air New Zealand, and these companies offer internships for top travel students.

Are you looking for professional development or an opportunity to learn more about Hotel Management?

SIT's Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma programmes are designed for students with an undergraduate degree (or relevant experience) who are wanting to transition into the hotel industry, or current hospitality professionals looking to progress into higher management positions by gaining formal qualifications in the hospitality industry.

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in strategic hotel management, tourism and hospitality management, entrepreneurship and event management. You will learn to understand, apply and communicate principles and concepts relevant to hotel management in order to function as a professional practitioner at a senior level in the industry or progress to further study.

The programme has a strong focus on management practices in the hotel and tourism industries, and on the skills needed for lifelong learning in a changing global business environment.

The programme aims to develop dedicated professionals and to equip them with a qualification that is highly regarded by employers and the community.

The aim of this programme of study is to develop graduates who have the skills and knowledge to work as senior operators at a strategic level in the hotel, tourism and travel industries or progress to futher study.

On completion of the New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel (Level 5) programme of study, graduates will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • apply effective verbal and written communication skills in order to communicate with diverse audiences in the tourism industry, to proactively support the visitor experience.
  • manage workplace practices required of a tourism workplace including: self-management, effective time and task management, and compliance with relevant Acts and legislation.
  • analyse and evaluate local, national and international tourism operating environments in order to support decision-making in the tourism industry
  • develop, analyse and critique tourism business systems and processes that enable the delivery of a quality visitor experience and contribute to overall business effectiveness.

Course Details

One year full-time.

On completion of the New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel (Level 5) programme of study, graduates will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • apply effective verbal and written communication skills in order to communicate with diverse audiences in the tourism industry, to proactively support the visitor experience.
  • manage workplace practices required of a tourism workplace including: self-management, effective time and task management, and compliance with relevant Acts and legislation.

The aim of the New Zealand Certificate in Travel (Level 4) is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to work as junior consultants in travel related businesses providing quality customer service, product advice and sales in a travel industry context.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the tourism and travel industry with individuals who can support and enhance the visitor experience, and through their skills and knowledge uphold the importance of tourism to the New Zealand economy.

The qualification will benefit the community by enhancing New Zealand’s tourism visitor experiences and bringing economic benefits to the country.

Course Details

The Travel and Tourism units aim to give students a foundation of knowledge in Travel and Tourism. They can directly be cross credited into SITs Certificate in Tourism (Level 3) If students are interested in Travel and Tourism these units will provide them with base introductory skills for this industry. Career Pathways: Students that complete these unit standards will gain knowledge for further study in the Travel Tourism and Hotel Management sector. Further study options with SIT2LRN distance learning are New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel (Level 5) or study on campus at SIT: Bachelor of Hotel Management or at the Queenstown campus: New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel Level 5
