Issue 27 August 2018, out now!

In this issue:

We profile Anna Chapman, the mother of two teenagers has not only completed a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, but also worked full-time at building a comprehensive health and safety programme for the engineering business she and her husband own. And she’s not finished studying – a graduate diploma is now in her sights.

Former teacher Bridget Paddon is enjoying the fruits of her education. Among her varying qualifications is a Diploma in Professional Coaching from SIT2LRN that has enabled her to set up her own coaching business to help clients achieve their goals.

When Evan Jenkins was ‘encouraged’ to leave school as a 15-year-old, little did he think that he would go on to seek tertiary education in later years. Yet with dogged determination, the realisation that education had significant value, and with the support of SIT2LRN he’s not only achieving at high levels in his field of civil construction but is embarking on further education. As he puts it, that’s “not bad for a guy with no education”.

Gary Bradshaw has the challenge of a new job in a foreign country to deal with and is also studying horticulture with SIT2LRN and finding ways to pass on some of that knowledge at the international school he works at in Beijing.

There are also profiles on some of our awesome facilitators – Lynne Warden, Robin Atherton, and Karen Wightman – as well as information about the increasingly popular courses on organic primary production.

SIT2LRN History

SIT2LRN is a distance learning programme run by the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) from our Downtown campus in Invercargill, New Zealand. Courses are delivered using an online Blackboard system and students are guided and supported by highly qualified facilitators from throughout the country and have access to numerous resources and support services, offered by SIT.

From a humble beginning in 2003, SIT2LRN Distance Learning has grown into a leader of innovative, quality education. We offer 43 qualifications - up to postgraduate diploma level - across a variety of sectors including education, business, computing, health sciences, horticulture and sports. There are several intakes for each course throughout the year.

SIT2LRN evolved from the SIT Zero Fee Scheme which was launched in 2001, with the support of community funders, to New Zealand students studying on campus. So popular was the take-up of the Zero Fees offer, SIT immediately began planning to roll out the initiative to students throughout New Zealand via a novel delivery method – multi-media. In partnership with Southland TV (now Cue TV) SIT used television and internet technology to provide its distance learning.

In 2008, SIT became the second tertiary institute in New Zealand, the eighth in Australasia and the southernmost in the world to join the iTunes U project. Within a year SIT had surpassed world-renowned universities Cambridge, Oxford and Stanford to top the worldwide list of most popular education downloads on iTunes U, with its “Intensive English” series being number one for six months. It recorded its two millionth download in November 2010 and Apple, the owner of iTunes U, was using SIT as an example of how a small institute could achieve so much on the educational world stage.

In 2013, over 3000 students took the opportunity to study through SIT2LRN and it’s anticipated a similar number will enrol during 2014.  And while the Zero Fee Scheme is only available to New Zealand citizens, SIT2LRN’s reach continues to increase around the globe.

"The best aspects were I was able to learn at my own pace, and from home, the support was good, and the library loan system excellent"

- feedback via Graduate Destination Survey 2014
