SIT's School of Massage Therapy first offered the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage in 2002, the first massage degree in NZ and the Southern Hemisphere. The degree is supported by the only dedicated massage research institute in New Zealand, ensuring you receive the highest quality academic and clinical education available.

The New Zealand Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage (Level 5) and the New Zealand Diploma in Remedial Massage (Level 6) staircase into the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage degree (BTSM).

6 Months full time

The Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Health Science (Wellness and Rehabilitation) is aimed at wellness and rehabilitation practitioners wishing to undertake a short programme of study in order to extend and update their knowledge and skills. The aim is to extend their capability in critical and professional/clinical reasoning for specialist practice, leadership and management in professional settings. The programme is tailored to the individual study needs of each student. Public and private sector organisations employing graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Health Science (Wellness and Rehabilitation) will benefit from the knowledge and specialist skills that the graduates have acquired during their programme of study.

Course Details

1 Year full-time

The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Health Science (Wellness and Rehabilitation) is aimed at wellness and rehabilitation practitioners and recent graduates (in fields such as chiropractic, health science, massage therapy, medicine, naturopathy, nursing, occupational therapy, osteopathy, physiotherapy, sport and exercise) wishing to undertake a comprehensive programme of study in order to upgrade their qualifications and extend their knowledge and skills with the objective of obtaining employment or advancing their careers. The programme is tailored to the individual study needs of each student. Public and private sector organisations employing graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Health Science (Wellness and Rehabilitation) will benefit from the broad knowledge and skill set (including problem-solving) that the graduates have acquired during their programme of study.

Three years full time

  • SIT's Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage is the first named massage degree programme to be approved in New Zealand. It has been taught since 2002.
  • Students gain extensive experience over the 3 years by running a community-based clinic on campus, completing industry placements, and working at local sports and community events.
  • Papers include anatomy and physiology, general pathology, therapeutics, clinical assessment, massage for physical performance, business management and research.
  • Our degree exceeds industry requirements both academically and in clinical practice - tutors are highly qualified and promote research-driven education.

To gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further training in the Massage industry with emphasis on remedial massage .

To provide a base for learners to progress to more advanced studies in Massage.

To provide massage education programmes that will enhance the knowledge base, skills and professionalism of those working or intending to work in the Massage industry especially in the area of remedial massage .

To produce dedicated, professional practitioners who hold a qualification which is well regarded by employers in the Massage industry.

massage_SITSouthern Institute of Technology (SIT) is an affiliate member of Massage New Zealand (MNZ).  MNZ promotes the profession of massage and supports the quality massage therapy education offered at SIT.  MNZ is the only massage therapy specific membership body in New Zealand for professional massage therapists.  It also promotes massage therapy and the ongoing development of the massage industry in New Zealand, through educating the public about the benefits of massage therapy for health and wellness.
