Study Vet Nursing and Animal Care at SIT - on campus or via distance learningIf you love animals and want a career in animal care, production or welfare, our courses  in Veterinary Nursing and Animal Care give you the skills and knowledge to gain employment in a variety of roles. 

With five vets on hand and a fully equipped clinic, studying Animal Care and Veterinary Nursing on-campus at SIT in Invercargill offers plenty of hands-on practice and supporting expertise. Alternatively, the SIT2LRN New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care is a great starting point for distance learning students.

Our on-campus programmes include Certificate level study in Animal Care and Animal Technology. Students can focus on companion animals, rural animals or veterinary nursing. The New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Veterinary Nursing Assistant strand) is a pre-requisite course which can lead onto the New Zealand Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. Graduates of this diploma programme will have the skills and experience necessary for employment in a range of clinical, field and industry roles.

One year full-time (or two years including the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) with strand in Veterinary Nursing Assistant, which is a prerequisite to the Diploma)

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare individuals as a veterinary nursing care professional by providing them with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to help animals attain, maintain or recover optimal health and quality of life. Graduates will also be able to practice sustainably and to engage in on-going learning in the field.

Students with an interest in the health and handling of large animals from a veterinary perspective should enrol in this interesting and challenging programme. On successful completion of this programme, graduates will be able to work competently as rural animal technicians in a veterinary practice.

This qualification equips graduates with essential skills to become Rural Animal Technicians that are able to assist veterinarians with large animals or mixed practice and in the field or work independently.

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare individuals as a veterinary nursing assistant by providing them with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to help assist veterinarians and veterinary nurses in a companion animal practice.

The Telford Certificate in Equine covers topics such as Equine Health, Nutrition, and Agricutural Skills, as well as a range of practical skills and knowledge specific to the students preferred industry sector. 

This programme prepares you to enter the Equine industry in roles such as rider, coach, groom, stable worker, or breeding assistant

Students can specilise in a specific strand:

  • Sporthorse (riding or coaching)
  • track riding
  • harness racing
  • breeding

One year, part-time

Gain knowledge and understanding of the horses hoof and the farriery profession. This programme is for those who have an interest or involvement with farriery and who wish to improve their knowledge or qith a view to instructing and/or managing a farriery business.

This programme is for people who have an interest or involvement with horse sports or the equine industry and who wish to improve their knowledge, or are interested in instructing and/or managing an equine business.

The qualification is designed for individuals who wish to gain employment in the equine industry. On completion of this programme, graduates enter the equine industry in a number of different areas such as racing stables, sport horse stables, and horse breeding farms.

  • Provide a base for learners to progress to more advanced studies in animal care
  • Provide a programme of study that will enhance the knowledge base for the contexts of companion animals for those working or intending to work in the animal care sector

 The aims of the qualification are as follows:

  • Gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working, or further training in the animal care sector.
  • Provide a base for learners to progress to more advanced studies in animal care.
  • Provide a programme of study that will enhance the knowledge base for the contexts of lifestyle block animals for those working, or intending to work in the animal care sector.

Course Details

These units aim to provide students with the skills and knowledge required for employment or further training in the animal care sector. All students completing US5148, US5152, US 7337, US21382 are required to complete a detailed diary that contains physical aspects of nursing/caring for their animal. All completed diary work is to be signed off by an animal care professional. Video evidence of the practical component MUST be submitted on the provided SIT2LRN USB. Students that successfully complete the below unit standards could go on to employment within the respective areas such as boarding kennels, stables etc or complete further study at our SIT2LRN distance learning program and complete: New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Level 3) or apply to study on campus: New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5).
