The first class of the unified hairdressing level 4, The New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing programme recently started at Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) with 15 budding hair stylists taking on the busy programme.
Developed in conjunction with industry guidance over the last two years, the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing, Professional Stylist (Level 4) which started at SIT on April 28, has created a completely new pathway to become a qualified hairdresser.
In response to industry needs, the new programme has a greater emphasis on learning practical, hands-on skills, where students participate in “more intensified” training for 23 hours per week. There’s also a reduction of the overall length of time to become a qualified hairdresser. Those graduating with the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing Level 3 are eligible to continue onto the Level 4 programme, to become a fully qualified Hairdresser (two years training); graduates can work in a salon with broad guidance. This should result in more new hairdressers entering the workforce, eventually relieving the current shortage.
Newly appointed tutor, Helen Lee, brings a wealth of practical knowledge and technical expertise from 40 years’ experience in the hair industry for the Level 4 programme, as well as a lifelong passion for education.
“My own journey began with exceptional foundational training which set the scene for a career dedicated to delivering the best service and experience I could for my clients,” she said, and was committed to building students’ confidence and knowledge by mastering the basics well. “… only then can you start to build on advanced skills and prepare for success in a competitive and evolving industry,” she added.
The Level 4 programme is designed to develop the next generation of hairdressers, Ms Lee explained. Students participate in more advanced hairdressing training, with a significant focus on extensive practice-based learning, client days and contact with industry specialists. “My focus is to empower our students to become more independent through setting the scene of what success looks like, and give them guidance on how to achieve this, through practical learning and professional salon communication.”
Teaming up with Ms Lee to help meet the demand of increased client days and practical training is fellow tutor, hairdresser, Lisa Black, known for her dynamic leadership, extensive industry experience and training expertise. With an ongoing drive and dedication to all areas of hairdressing and business practice, Ms Black was a perfect fit for the SIT Hairdressing team.
Ms Lee said she was excited about the busy year ahead delivering the Level 4 programme “I’m passionate about creating a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone to prosper and develop through hard work, determination and stretched goals.”
