Officially opened late 2011 the revamped SIT Downtown Campus on Don Street Invercargill has established itself as a central city creative zone housing our art, design, photography, film, animation, music, audio, fashion, journalism and drama students.

These areas work closely together, often collaborating for live performances, exhibitions and filming opportunities during the year, while students and staff have also been involved in significant community events.

SIT’s annual hairdressing information evening will be held on Monday the 17th February following the Elementary Hair Design ‘creative long hair ups’ Competition at SIT with guest speakers including Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation (HITO) Chief Executive Officer Erica Cumming.

Shannon Thomson teaches photography to journalism students at the Southern Institute of Technology and she knows the news value of a good photo.

“A great photo can make an average story front page news,” she said.

Queenstown has tradionally been a difficult area to find accommodation, and it's no exception for students. With a dearth of rental accommodation, and some of the most expensive housing in New Zealand, the popular resort town can be difficult for workers and students to find a place to live.

But with the addition of a purpose-built accommodation block, completed just before Christmas, SIT is looking to expand. The mixture of three and four-bedroom self-contained apartments will become ‘home’ for up to 50 students from throughout New Zealand and beyond.
