Study Vet Nursing and Animal Care at SIT - on campus or via distance learningIf you love animals and want a career in animal care, production or welfare, our courses  in Veterinary Nursing and Animal Care give you the skills and knowledge to gain employment in a variety of roles. 

With five vets on hand and a fully equipped clinic, studying Animal Care and Veterinary Nursing on-campus at SIT in Invercargill offers plenty of hands-on practice and supporting expertise. Alternatively, the SIT2LRN New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care is a great starting point for distance learning students.

Our on-campus programmes include Certificate level study in Animal Care and Animal Technology. Students can focus on companion animals, rural animals or veterinary nursing. The New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Veterinary Nursing Assistant strand) is a pre-requisite course which can lead onto the New Zealand Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. Graduates of this diploma programme will have the skills and experience necessary for employment in a range of clinical, field and industry roles.

One year, Full-time

Study the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology - Rural Animal Technician at Telford. This qualification equips graduates with essential skills to become Rural Animal Technicians that are able to assist veterinarians with large animals or mixed practice and in the field or work independently.

Course Details

1 year, Full-time

This full-year programme includes both the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Level 3) with strand in Sporthorse Stable Assistant with the New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture with strand in Vehicles, Machinery and Infrastructure qualifications. You will learn about the stabling, care and exercise of horse in the Sporthorse industry, and also how to safely and effectively carry out activities involving vehicles, machinery and infrastructure with a special focus on equipment used in the equine industry.
