SIT Sound’s latest acquisition of high-tech audio gear, purpose-built by Mosgiel company Perreaux Audio, has opened the door to further projects, including specialised hi-fi loudspeakers and the potential for an ongoing research project.

Perreaux supplied a mastering grade integrated amplifier and loudspeakers to SIT Sound to equip a studio for professional grade mastering. “They [Perreaux] make one of the best bespoke, precision high fidelity and headphone amplifiers in the world,” said Doug Heath, Programme Manager for the Schools of Sound and Contemporary Music at SIT, a business division of Te Pūkenga. The high-power integrated amplifier reproduces sound as accurately as possible, giving students the opportunity to hear the full range of sounds.

Mr Heath said in recent times there had been a shift away from MP3-quality audio back to higher quality sound; this was the technology demanded by the industry and consumers. Students need to be discerning and know the difference. “Having graduates current in the industry is an ongoing standard for us – it’s essential for the student, it’s not a one-time thing... we are a centre for vocational excellence.”

Perreaux products had proven themselves over time and it was a sustainability choice to use a brand which had a legendary reputation for longevity. It was also giving students access to Perreaux gear they would find in sound studios around the world when they graduated and pursued their careers in the industry.

Because the company were world and industry renowned for excellence, Mr Heath was keen to further the relationship, by creating a research project for staff and students, which could see the development of an NZ designed-and-made mastering console. “It’s going to be an exciting 2023, watch this space” Mr Heath added.
