This programme aims to provide participants who complete the qualification with the skills and knowledge required to operate as capable technicians in the construction industry. The programme also aims to develop skills applicable to the wider construction industry, including health and safety plans, quality assurance and construction methodologies.

Graduates of this programme will have the knowledge and skills required to enter the motor industry, and be able to employ safe working practices appropriate to the industry. Graduates will be competent in a wide range of relevant industry skills.

SIT works in conjunction with local service providers to provide quality trained staff to help service the farming, civil construction and road transport industries.  Specifically its automotive section is providing pre-trade training for potential diesel mechanics.

SIT is accredited to provide a specialised course in Automotive Heavy Trades by the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).  We are also accredited to conduct off-job training for diesel mechanics and hold a distance learning contract for the MITO, meaning SIT facilitates and assesses correspondence work for apprentices all around New Zealand.

During the Certificate in Automotive Heavy Trades course, students are placed with a recognised automotive heavy equipment repairer who will both delegate them various tasks and help SIT assess their progress.

This programme aims to provide people working in the hospitality industry with education in the art of making and serving coffee.

The Diploma in Beauty Therapy (Level 5) will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of treatments at a professional level within the commercial environment.

This course is designed for people who have very basic to no welding skills, or those who wish to improve their welding skills.  There is facility for MMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding).  The Beginners / Improvers course does not include aluminium welding. This course is run with the NZS2980 course and combined they are limited to 11 places.

Our Beginners AutoCAD night course covers:

• creating and plotting 2 dimensional drawings using a variety of draw and modify commands.
• creating new drawings using layers text, dimensions and blocks ie. creating and inserting.
• use of model space and paper space for plotting.

This qualification is designed specifically to provide a progressive pathway for students to integrate into a wide range of trade-related occupations.  The qualification includes compulsory standards that focus on the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills that form the structural base of the qualification.  The range of skills and activities contained in the elective section provides an opportunity to develop a flexible approach to learning.  It provides a range of opportunities for structured workplace learning through work-based learning programmes.

This programme gives you seven of the eight papers you need for the well recognised national qualification NZIM Certificate in Management or NZIM Certificate in Small Business Management.

This is an ideal programme if you are preparing to enter/re-enter the workforce, seeking new employment opportunities or thinking of starting your own business. This programme is designed to meet the needs of graduates who wish to start their own business as well as those who want to learn about entrepreneurship, innovation and business enterprise management in an existing business. Students in the programme will not only be focused on creating new business ventures, but will also have a willingness and commitment to learn about new enterprise creation and development from theoretical and research based perspectives. 

This course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate at an entry level in the field of hospitality across a range of disciplines. It will allow students to gain the relevant industry licences that are required in the industry, such as a liquor licence and food safety certificate.

The programme will allow students to:

SIT's Bachelor of Commerce degree will be available from the start of 2013.  Approval and accreditation have been obtained from the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and NZQA.

The programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further education in the commerce sector, demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the commerce sector as appropriate, and develop work habits and practices appropriate for further education and employment in the commerce sector. 

Students also have the opportunity to credit transfer papers to the SIT Bachelor of Commerce programme, on a paper for paper basis, and continue with a third year of study to complete the SIT Bachelor of Commerce.

This course will provide students with the practical skills required for making and designing floristry products such as hand-tied bouquets and posies, corsages, floral gifts, wristlets and buttonholes, and flower arrangements.  It also covers important operational functions for providing floristry service in a retail environment including the conditioning and preparation of products, appropriateness for the occasion, handling and care, supplier and seasonal availability, toxicity/allergy characteristics, shelf life and price, and customer service skills.

The Certificate in Construction course covers carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction skills.  Every class builds a house from scratch, with practical sessions being alternated with classroom learning.  Classes are 3 days per week and students are encouraged to seek work experience with an employer for the other 2 days.  This course allows students to work through a lot of the theory units required for their building apprenticeship, which should help them get through their apprenticeship faster.

This is an introductory certificate for people wishing to pursue employment and further training in the electrical and related industries.  It is the first stage of training leading to qualifications as an electrician, or in switchgear fitting, motor rewinding and repair, industrial measurement and control, electronic security and related trades. 

The aim of this programme is to produce students who can demonstrate competence in customer service, reception, salon support tasks, and elementary and selected complex hairdressing skills. It aims to prepare students for either work in a hairdressing salon, or further study and to develop a sound base for further training in hairdressing skills.

The aim of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering is to provide skilled and competent engineering technicians who:

• apply engineering theory to practice, and competently perform technical operations to the standards, ethical and professional responsibilities required by the engineering profession;
• have a knowledge sufficient to permit informed, rational decision making in a specialist fields of engineering and to implement these decisions;
• will work collaboratively with construction workers, clients, authorities, agencies, industry and other professionals to provide a comprehensive engineering service in the relevant specialist area; and
• have an understanding of all cultures and in particular an awareness and clear understanding of the tangata whenua and the implications of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Resource Management Act.

It is expected that graduates will attain the educational underpinnings and work ready attributes defined in the IPENZ Graduate Profile for Engineering Technicians.  The graduate profile defined by IPENZ is benchmarked internationally to the exemplar graduate attributes for graduates of technician education programmes recognised under the Dublin Accord.

SIT's Bachelor of Fashion (Design and Technology) emphasises both the creative and technical aspects of the fashion industry from concept and design development through to production. The Certificate in Introductory Plumbing and Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing is a full-time programme of 18 tutorial weeks.

It is an entry-level programme providing students with the skills and knowledge required for employment or further training in the plumbing and gasfitting, drainlaying or roofing sectors and as an introduction for those interested in obtaining one or more of the Level 4 National Certificates in Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing. 

The theoretical and practical skills taught in this qualification reflect the diverse range of skills required to work in the sector.

A career in joinery can offer job satisfaction with practical hands-on manufacturing. The Certificate in Joinery programme can provide a direct pathway into the joinery and furniture making industries.

SIT has a well-appointed training facility with some of the most modern equipment available. Students manufacture full-size, quality, practical projects throughout the duration of the programme and have the opportunity to use a wide range of traditional and advanced computer controlled machinery.

The National Diploma in Journalism (Multi-media) (Level 5) is the initial qualification for a professional journalist in the specialist area of newspaper journalism. It is a nationally recognised qualification, taught at a journalism school which is supported by foreign correspondent Peter Arnett.

Learning at the Peter Arnett School of Journalism is facilitated by a simulated newsroom environment with individual work stations, newspaper files and a daily news sourcing system.  The aim is to create a working environment which enables students to develop skills in news gathering, news writing, meeting deadlines and teamwork. Students will be assigned news rounds and are expected to develop stories for publications.  In addition, students will spend four weeks in work experience placements at newspapers around New Zealand.

The programme will allow students to begin to explore ideas through drawing and media, to recognise the design process, to use drawing to record development, to use a journal/workbook to help develop and extend ideas, to recognise some aspects of cultural practice (waiata, kawa, tikanga), to explore own whakapapa, to explore ideas through media, to identify basic techniques and begin to apply these to make work, to use a variety of media and techniques, to follow safe workshop practice, to present work under some direction and to practice basic time management.

The aim is to qualify people as line managers, supervisors, section, departmental or branch managers. NZIM has selected a range of papers from the New Zealand Diploma in Business to make up the Diploma in Management. You need to do four compulsory and choose two optional papers to complete this qualification. These papers are taken from the basket of papers available for the New Zealand Diploma in Business as approved by NZQA. This means that students can gain certification in the NZIM Diploma in Management while they study towards the New Zealand Diploma in Business, but must ensure that they satisfy all course and individual paper prerequisites to gain certification in both qualifications. NZIM charges a fee to register each paper.

With massage therapy experiencing increasing popularity world wide, SIT offers a certificate in massage therapy to prepare students for the industry. The certificate programme is designed to provide skills and theoretical knowledge particularly for relaxation and basic sports massage.

This programme recognises the core knowledge and skills required to work as an assistant in professional practice in massage, and assists students to enter the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage.

This programme will allow students to gain the basic skills and knowledge required to succeed in the mechanical engineering or fabrication industries. This is an intensive programme looking at all of the areas of engineering and providing the entry skills for an apprenticeship in the engineering sector.

The programme will allow students to consistently demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of mental health and illness and mental health services, and consistently demonstrate appropriate attitudes and values for mental health support work.

This qualification is designed for learners who wish to enter mental health and addiction support work, or who already work as paid or unpaid mental health and addiction support workers under supervision. People completing this qualification will meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health’s (2008) Let's get real framework at the essential level of performance.

The Diploma in Sport and Recreation is hands-on, practical course where students can specialise in either sports development/personal training or outdoor recreation leadership.

This fun and exciting programme is a foundation level of the Māori language which will introduce you to basic tikanga Māori and introductory conversational Māori.

Te Reo Māori is developed further to enable tauira to speak confidently at an intermediate level in conversations and everyday situations. You will have a greater understanding of ‘Nga Tikanga Māori' from both a traditional and contemporary context. The programme is made up of four wahanga (sections) Te Hau Rawhiti - The East, Te Hau Raki - The North, Te Hau a Uru - The West, and Te Hau Tonga - The South. Te Hau Rawhiti has a descriptive focus, Te Hau Raki contains a language of investigation, Te Hau a Uru begins with a focus on retelling stories and rekindling memories and Te Hau Tonga continues to focus on present happenings and occurrences.

This course aims to:

• Examine and practise: tikanga Māori, marae kawa, karanga, tauparapara, whaikorero, whakapapa, waiata and karakia
• Impart knowledge of classic Māori history

The National Certificate in Travel (Level 4) recognises the skills and knowledge required in making and processing international travel arrangements that meet customer needs; including the ability to make computerised reservations for domestic land, water and air travel, and domestic and international accommodation. SIT Invercargill Campus is offering courses in Unit Standard 24305: “Install, test, commission, and maintain solar water heating systems”.

It is a 4 day theory and practical learning and assessment block course aimed at licenced plumbers who wish to become eligible to apply for Registration as an EECA Participating Installer, or to hone their  skills to improve the quality of solar hot water installation.

This programme provides students with the theoretical and practical skills appropriate for entering employment in the animal health sector, or in preparation for further specialist study. The qualification will be awarded to students who have competence in a wide range of skills appropriate to work in a veterinary clinic.

This qualification is a progression from the Certificate in Elementary Hair Design.  It recognises people in the hairdressing industry who have demonstrated competence in the knowledge and skills required by industry. Holders of the qualification are able to consult and analyse with a client and give advice, provide detailed client records, provide basic client services such as midway colouring, clipper cutting, basic hair cutting, make informed decisions on what action needs to be taken and carry out that action in a professional manner, recommend home hair care products and how to take care of and style the hair and communicate with the client fully at all times.
