Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is proud to be launching its Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) — a significant milestone for our Social Services Department and the wider Southland community. We are seeking a registered Social Worker to join us as a Tutor, contributing to the establishment and delivery of this new degree programme for the first time.
This is a rare opportunity to be involved at the ground level of a new professional programme, shaping curriculum delivery, supporting student development, and upholding the professional standards required for social work registration in Aotearoa New Zealand.
About the role
As a Social Worker Tutor, you will deliver high‑quality teaching and assessment within the Bachelor of Social Work, ensuring alignment with Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) standards, NZQA requirements, and SIT academic policies. You will play a key role in supporting students’ professional readiness, including fitness‑for‑practice decisions and progression toward registration as social workers.
This position sits within the Faculty of Health and Humanities and is based at SIT’s Invercargill campus.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver and assess BSW teaching aligned to SWRB, NZQA and SIT requirements
- Design, assess and moderate valid, fair assessments
- Exercise professional judgement and gatekeeping responsibility for student fitness for practice
- Contribute to programme development, review and continuous improvement
- Embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice in teaching and student support
About you
- Registered Social Worker (SWRB) with a current practising certificate (essential)
- Recognised Social Work qualification with a Master’s degree (completed or in progress)
- Sound knowledge of SWRB competence standards, codes of conduct and accreditation expectations
- Demonstrated application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori in practice
- Ability to make ethical, well‑documented decisions regarding student suitability and readiness for professional practice
- Tertiary teaching or supervision experience is desirable but not required.
