Southern Institute of Technology

Invercargill

Permanent - Full Time

An opportunity has arisen in our Business Intelligence team for an additional team member to help deliver more value from data across Southern Institute of Technology.

The BI team is a small, established group that works closely together and with stakeholders across the institute. With a major student management system migration underway, we are adding capacity to accelerate delivery, rebuild key reporting solutions, and respond to growing demand for information.

As a Business Intelligence Analyst, you will work hands‑on with data, reports, and pipelines, contributing to solutions used day‑to‑day by staff across the organisation. This role suits someone who enjoys practical problem‑solving, collaboration in a small team, and seeing the impact of their work.

You will work with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation — from frontline staff supporting daily operations through to senior leaders making key business decisions — translating information needs into clear, trusted reporting and insights.

The role involves supporting data requests, building and improving reports and dashboards, maintaining data pipelines, and addressing data issues as systems change.

Our reporting environment primarily uses Power BI (including Power BI Report Server and paginated reporting) and Microsoft SQL Server, but we are open to other tools and approaches where they add value.

Join our team and play a key role in the next stage of data‑driven decision‑making at Southern Institute of Technology.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop end-to-end data pipelines and reports, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand reporting and information requirements and provide timely solutions.
  • Manage incoming projects and ad-hoc data requests in a ticketing system.
  • Design, build, test, and implement Power BI reports and dashboards following visualisation best practices and agreed business definitions.
  • Translate business requirements into clear specifications for dashboards and reports.
  • Provide support to ensure the availability, accuracy, and performance of developed reports and dashboards for users.
  • Monitor, diagnose, and correct issues impacting data pipelines; communicate impacts to relevant users as needed.
  • Produce project planning and technical documentation for developed solutions.
  • Train and support staff on using BI solutions and interpreting reports; contribute to team standards and change management practices.

The successful applicant will have the following:

  • Ideally, experience in a prior similar role, and a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business, or Computer Science (or equivalent experience). Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) would be desirable.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a Business Intelligence, Reporting, or Database Development role.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Power BI and adherence to report development and data visualisation best practices.
  • Proficient in writing efficient Microsoft SQL Server queries and optimising performance.
  • Experience creating reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) or a similar tool (including paginated reporting).
  • Proficiency in designing data structures for reporting solutions (dimensional modelling).
  • Experience using PowerShell, Python, or similar programming language.
  • Experience with Artena and SIMS
  • A positive, practical, solution-focused approach and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with a diverse range of stakeholders across the institute.
