The motor industry offers great opportunities to people with good technical knowledge and hands-on skills. This programme runs three days a week and also requires the apprentice to gain practical industry experience. Graduates of this programme will have the knowledge and skills required to enter any sector of the motor industry, and be able to employ safe, appropriate work practices. 

SIT has some of the best automotive facilities in the country and really good relationships with local employers. This course has been endorsed by the MITO and the Automotive Advisory Committee (Invercargill) which represents the local industry.

When you complete a pre-trade course you receive an industry recognised qualification that can set you on your way to an apprenticeship in your chosen field.

The tools and overalls that you will use while training are yours to keep at the end of your course.

By successfully completing this programme and obtaining the Certificate in Automotive Engineering you will be able to prove to potential employers that you have the desire, commitment, base knowledge and skills that they are looking for in a new apprentice. Your work experience will have enabled you to prove your abilities in a real workplace and to make industry contacts which will help you to gain an apprenticeship.

Graduates can begin an apprenticeship at year two (Level 3) in:

  • National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) (Level 3 and Level 4) with strands in Electrical and Electronics, Light Vehicle, Motorcycle, Outdoor Power Equipment, and Trailer Boat Systems
  • National Certificate in Automotive Engineering
  • National Certificate in Automotive Heavy Engineering
  • National Certificate in Motorcycle Engineering
  • National Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering
  • National Certificate in Outdoor Power Equipment Servicing
  • National Certificate in Automotive Engine Reconditioning
  • National Certificate in Diesel Fuel Injection Engineering
  • National Certificate in Trailer Boat Systems Engineering

  • Three years secondary education preferred or equivalent achievement in NCEA, a minimum of 10 credits at level one in both numeracy and literacy is required.
  • Desire to work in the automotive industry.
  • Mature students are welcome.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence of having successfully completed English instruction  in accordance with NZQA guidelines, or have successfully completed an appropriate NZQA approved English proficiency test.

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and to be eligible for award of the qualification Certificate in Automotive Engineering, they must have:

  • shown competence in practical and theoretical course work to a minimum of 120 credits
  • attended for not less than 80% of the timetabled class hours and and met other course requirements.

Please note – students failing to attend for 80% of timetabled programme hours will forfeit zero fees entitlement.

Semester 1: 3 days per week class time: Mon, Tues, Wed, 8.00am-5.00pm. 1 to 2 days work experience.

Semester 2: 3 days per week class time: Wed, Thurs, Fri, 8.00am-5.00pm. Work experience Monday and Tuesday.

Students are also required to partake in at least one full day a week work experience with a recognised automotive technician or similar who will delegate you various tasks and help SIT assess your progress. There is no expectation upon the employer to offer paid employment for this period, although this can be a confidential agreement between employer and student. You are encouraged to find your own work experience with a suitable company in the sector of the industry that interests you most.

In addition to the above, students will be required to complete regular homework.
