Bachelor of Screen Arts (Animation strand)

Currently in her third year of a Bachelor of Screen Arts (Animation strand), Megan Askew grew up in Christchurch and then spent six years living in Dunedin prior to moving to Invercargill.

She has had a lifelong interest in art and animation, an interest that bought her south to the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT).

Prior to her Screen Arts degree studies, Megan completed a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Zoology) and a Masters degree in Zoology, and she is currently interning at Dynakinetix.

‘’I’ve had a lifelong interest in art and animation, and the degree is free - thanks Zero Fees,” she says.

“My brother used to go here under the Bachelor of Screen Arts - film strand.”

Megan didn’t really know what to expect before coming to Invercargill to start the course, but says it has provided her with the resources that are industry standard and tutors that have taught her how to use these resources.

“SIT taught me the ins and outs of animation and game development pipelines.”

Recently Megan and her animation peers attended the New Zealand Game Developer’s Conference, meeting many people from the various Game Development companies in both New Zealand and overseas

She enjoyed learning all aspects of animation and meeting like-minded peers.

“We managed to go to the NZGDC as well as take trips to Bluff to see local artists,” Megan says.

Although the deadlines were challenging at times, she says one of the classes involved making a website/portfolio, which will help her show future employers the best of her work.

“I’m hoping to get a job in one of New Zealand’s animation or game studios.”
