Over the coming decade, major developments including the Hokonui Wind Farm, the proposed Silica Smelter development, and the planned USD $3.5 billion DataGrid Data Centre are expected to create unprecedented demand for skilled electrical professionals across the region.

 

The challenge is clear: we need to train the next generation of electricians who will build, maintain, and power New Zealand's future.

 

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is seeking FIVE experienced and passionate Electrical Tutors to join our team and play a vital role in developing the workforce that will support these transformational projects.
This is more than a teaching role—it's an opportunity to shape careers, strengthen our communities, and contribute to the future prosperity of Southland and New Zealand.

 

About the Role
You will teach Electrical Trades programmes to full-time students and secondary-tertiary learners at our Invercargill campus.
Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver engaging, industry-relevant electrical trades education.
  • Take responsibility for the management of teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Foster practical skills and workplace readiness.

Student Success

  • Build positive relationships with students.
  • Provide guidance, support, and encouragement to help learners achieve their goals.

Programme Administration

  • Complete administrative requirements associated with programme delivery.

Professional Development

  • Maintain vocational currency within the electrical industry.
  • Continue developing teaching and assessment skills.

Programme Development

  • Contribute to the ongoing review, evaluation, and improvement of programmes to ensure graduates meet industry needs.


About You
You are an experienced electrical professional who wants to give back to the industry and help develop future tradespeople.

 

Ideally, you will have:

  • A recognised Electrical Trade Qualification.
  • A current EWRB Practising Licence.
  • Strong industry experience and a commitment to high standards.

Previous teaching experience is advantageous but not essential. SIT will support successful applicants to gain teaching qualifications through the New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 5).
