Taking the knowledge from the previous levels (Levels 1 to 3) in Te Reo Māori and develop further your Te Reo Māori skills in this Level 4 programme, the second part of the 36-week programme, New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo Māori (He Pī Ka Rere) Level 4, moving towards full-immersion.

You will develop a deeper understanding of the Māori culture and further build confidence in your Māori language skills. This is an interactive bilingual intermediate level Māori language programme that incorporates the beginnings of full-immersive.

Develop a greater understanding of the Māori culture while you practice and build confidence in your Māori language skills. Learn alongside others at the same level and have fun while you’re doing it.

In this programme you’ll learn a variety of sentence structures using te reo Māori in a range of formal and informal situations. You’ll be able to explain and practice tikanga Māori as well as learning a range of waiata and karakia.

When you finish the course, you’ll have the confidence to advance to full-immersion learning.

You will learn:

  • active and passive sentence structures
  • extending your vocabulary
  • using different tenses
  • distinguishing between Māori and non-Māori sentence structures.

You will know how to:

  • use a variety of sentence structures
  • use te reo Māori in a range of formal and informal situations
  • explain and practice tikanga Māori
  • use a range of waiata and karakia.

You must complete both Level 3 and Level 4 to receive the qualification. You will automatically be enrolled into Level 4 once you enrol into this course.

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive the following qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Reo Rua) Level 3 & Level 4

Whakamārama:  Distinguish and understand the A and O categories and ask and answer questions about ownership. 

Whakarārangi:  Articulate ideas on a range of subjects including names, objects and giving directions, comparing objects and people, and describe varying degrees of quality.

Rereāhua:  Use stative sentence structures with tense markers about present, past and future action, and join ideas to form coherent sentences and use varying forms of ‘and’.       

He aha ki tua?  Speak about events in the future using ‘when’ and using warnings in appropriate contexts and be able to demonstrate understanding of oral traditions, practices, and their significance.

 

You can put your te reo Māori skills to use in most jobs in Aotearoa.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Use Te Reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures at an advanced - intermediate level
  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to show an understanding of their connections to the land and the environment, prominent places, people, histories and stories, as an expression of mana whenua
  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level in selected contexts to develop a growing knowledge base of, and an emerging respect for Te Reo, as an expression of mana reo
  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to achieve tasks and guide others in specified contexts as an expression of mana ao turoa

School Leaver

Applicants should be a minimum of 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a person designated under sections 21 or 26 of the Education Act 1989, by a school principal from a school in which the prospective tauira is registered, or by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education. In addition applicants should have successfully completed the NZ Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori (He Pi Ka Rere) (Level 2) programme of study or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

English Language Requirements

Applicants, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having achieved one of the following:

NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or

an International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A- level qualification for which the teaching and assessment was conducted in English; or

Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), or Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL); or

Successful completion of all primary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand primary school years 1 to 8) and at least three years of secondary education (being the equivalent of three years from New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in  either New Zealand, Australia­, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States one of the countries listed in Rule 18.5 where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction; or

Successful completion of at least five years of secondary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction; or

Successful completion of a Bachelor ‘s Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters’ Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be  from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States or

Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the two years preceding the proposed date of enrolment.

Certificate at Level 4

  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination –B2 First or B2First for schools with a score of 162.  No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level   b) Current:
  • Level 3 (Academic) b) Level 3 (Applied)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B2 Communicator International ESOL Written (LRW) PASS with no less than 25/50 in each skill and Spoken (S) PASS
  • Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than pass in any band

Aim of this course:

  • To provide akonga with the knowledge and skills to converse in Te Reo Māori at an intermediate level
  • To provide akonga with the skills to communicate in Te Reo Māori with some independence and confidence in everyday whanau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts; and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.
  • To contribute positively to the development of Te Reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori or have a personal and/or professional interest in Te Reo Māori
  • To provide a pathway for entry to higher level qualifications
  • To provide an employment pathway to the diverse spaces within Te Ao Māori
  • To build a harmonious nation and provide access to Te Reo Māori for all

To satisfactorily complete New Zealand Certificate in Te Kunenga o Te Reo (He Pi Ka Rere) (Level 3 & 4) and be awarded this qualification the student must successfully achieve:

  • A minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for New Zealand Certificate in Te Kunenga o Te Reo (He Pi Ka Rere) (Level 3 & 4)
  • The student will normally be expected to complete New Zealand Certificate in Te Kunenga o Te Reo (He Pi Ka Rere) (Level 3 & 4) full-time over one year or part-time over two years.
