This Level is the second part of a 36-week programme, New Zealand Certificate In Te Reo Māori (Rumaki Reo Rua) Level 2.

This is an interactive bilingual beginner’s level Māori language programme.  This programme level will introduce the learner to more conversational Māori language and tikanga Māori, further enhancing learning in preparation for New Zealand Certificate In Te Reo Māori (Rumaki Reo Rua) Level 4.

If you want to learn basic Māori language, this is the perfect place to continue on from Level 1. Whether you want to use Te Reo Māori at home with the kids or in the workplace, this interactive programme will have you speaking with confidence in no time.

You will continue to improve correct pronounce of Māori words, names, and place names.  You will be able to use basic greetings and introduce yourself, as well as how to understand and follow tikanga (protocols). Our Kaiako (tutors) are experienced with teaching beginners, and you’ll be with other Tauira (students) who have the same aspirations to learn our indigenous language.

Te Reo Māori has become a part of the educational landscape of Aotearoa. Past graduates have been newsreaders, public figures, teachers, school principals and businesspeople - many who have advanced to higher levels of study in Te Reo Māori.

You will learn:

  • pronunciation
  • introductions
  • basic vocabulary
  • basic sentence structures
  • tikanga (customs and protocols)

You will know how to:

  • correctly pronounce Māori words, names and place names
  • use basic greetings and introduce yourself.
  • understand and follow tikanga (protocols)
  • perform some waiata.
  • use Māori words with confidence.
  • understand basic sentence structures.

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive the following qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Reo Rua) Level 2

You must complete both Level 1 and Level 2 to receive the qualification. You will automatically be enrolled into Level 2 once you enrol into this course.

Mahi Ngahau This kōnae ako introduces ākonga (students) to appropriate tense markers to talk about action and statives. Ākonga can ask and answer questions about the cost of something.

Haerenga This kōnae ako introduces the language of travel and holidays and gives ākonga the opportunity to engage in conversational Māori about the purpose of travel/holiday.

He Tikanga Marae This kōnae ako introduces ākonga to the various parts of the marae complex and the key roles of people and are given the opportunity to engage in conversational Māori.

Tangata Rongonui This kōnae ako introduces ākonga to the language of the third person. Ākonga then will be able to display confidence and competency when speaking in te reo Māori.

 

Te Reo Māori skills will be useful in everyday life in Aotearoa. They will also be great if you work in education, Māori organisations, media or anywhere you deal with the public.

On completion of this programme, graduates will have developed an understanding and knowledge of:

  • Correct pronunciation of sounds and words
  • Foundational sentence structures, grammar conventions and contextual vocabulary
  • Technical knowledge of foundational level Te Reo Māori in selected contexts and develop an emerging respect for Te Reo Māori.
  • Foundational level Te Reo Māori to achieve tasks in specified contexts.
  • Māori social organisation, institutions, protocols, and practices
  • Knowledge of Ako Whakatere methodology
  • Awareness of their individual learning styles and the ability to advocate for themselves.

Participating in huihuinga

Applicants should be a minimum of 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a person designated under sections 21 or 26 of the Education Act 1989, by a school principal from a school in which the prospective tauira is registered, or by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education.

Open entry, however, applicants should have little or no knowledge of Te Reo Māori and must attend an information sharing hui with a Kaiako before enrolment.

Language Requirements

Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate below 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence of:

Have gained NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University Entrance requirements, or

Have successfully completed a Bachelors Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or

Have achieved a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA, or

Have achieved the required score and with all scores achieved in a single test in one of the internationally recognised English Proficiency tests (specified above) within the preceding two years.

Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the preceding two years:

  • IELTS test - Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) – Score of 500 (with an essay score 4 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet- based test (iBT) – Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations – FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154.  No less than 154 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL a) To be discontinued on 31 December 2019 Level 3 General or Workplace, b) Current Level 3 General
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PToE (Academic score of 36)
  • City and Guilds IESOL – B1 Achiever with a score of 43
  • Language CertB1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS with PASS)

An NZQA approved English Language proficiency test, where the student has achieved an outcome that is equivalent or better than those scores listed for Internationally recognised English language proficiency tests above in relation to the level of intended programme of study, or

Completion of all primary education and at least three years’ secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction, or

Completion of five years of secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction.  

To successfully complete the New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Bilingual) (Level 2) students will need:

  • To have completed 60 credits from the Level 1 Programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Level 2).
  • A minimum of 60 credits in accordance with the Programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Level 2).
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Bilingual) (Level 2) programme of study full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

Successful completion of the Programmes Level 1 and Level 2 papers will culminate in your New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Bilingual) (Level 2) qualification.

Please Note: Students failing to attend for 80% of the timetabled programme hours may forfeit Zero Fees entitlement.
