National Award Success for SIT Online Photography Student

New Zealand Diploma in Photography (Level 5) student Julia Chen has earned a Bronze Award at the prestigious New Zealand Institute of Professional Photog-raphers (NZIPP) Iris Awards.

Julia, who began her studies via SIT Online distance learning from Auckland in July 2025, balances part-time study with raising her two daughters as a single mother. “I do part-time because I'm a single mum with two daughters so I'm quite busy in my daily life.”

When Julia saw the competition promoted online through NZIPP and photography groups on social media, she decided to take a chance and enter.

"The NZIPP Iris Awards are one of the highest-level photography competitions in New Zealand, so it was a really good opportunity to enter," she says.

The award-winning image captures two dancers performing on stage during a produc-tion by the Auckland New Ballet.

Julia's passion for photography centres on capturing live events and the arts, particu-larly dance and music performances.

"I enjoy photographing events, celebrations and performances because they capture such great energy and emotion. My daughters are dancers, which has helped me con-nect with ballet companies and the dance community."

Receiving the Bronze Award was both exciting and encouraging for Julia.

"I was really happy and honoured to receive the award. It means a lot and gives me confidence to continue developing my photography skills and studies."

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to SIT, as their excellence in education and support greatly contributed to my success.”

Julia hopes to turn her passion into a professional career. She has already launched her photography brand, @JuliaChenPhotos, on Instagram and plans to specialise in weddings, events and commercial photography.

"I want to build my photography business and work professionally in the industry. This award has motivated me to keep growing, connect with more people and create opportunities with new clients."

Congratulations, Julia, on this fantastic achievement. We look forward to seeing where your photography journey takes you next.
