For the first time, introductory Level 1 and Level 2 Te Reo Māori courses will be offered in a wider range of regional locations, including Te Anau, Winton, Ohai, Balclutha -Telford, Roxburgh, and continuing in Gore - Māruawai. These courses are offered 100% fees-free, making quality education accessible to more communities than ever before.
This initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening language revitalisation, encouraging lifelong learning, and supporting the professional and personal development of learners across the region.
The expansion into these new locations ensures that those living outside major centres can now engage more easily with te reo Māori study - removing barriers such as travel and cost.
“We are incredibly excited to bring these programmes into more communities across Southland and Otago,” says Pip Hakopa, Manager of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Invercargill. “Learning Te Reo Māori not only opens doors for career development, but it also deepens understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand’s bicultural identity. Offering these courses in new places and at Zero Fees, we are empowering more people to participate in, and contribute to, this important journey.”
The course is designed for beginners, providing a supportive and engaging introduction to te reo Māori, tikanga (customs), and cultural understanding. It is particularly valuable for those working in community-facing roles, education, healthcare, and business, as well as individuals interested in strengthening their personal connection to Aotearoa New Zealand's cultural heritage.
SIT and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s collaboration reflects a broader commitment to equitable education opportunities and community development, ensuring that learners across the southern region can benefit from high-quality, culturally enriching study options.
Enrolments are now open for all locations, with classes beginning in July 2026.
