Improving access to education is central to sustaining this growth, with SIT’s latest initiative designed to provide affordable, flexible tertiary pathways for migrant and work visa families already contributing to New Zealand’s workforce.
SIT now offers study options that allow students to learn from anywhere in New Zealand, either on campus or online, helping remove barriers for families who may otherwise find tertiary education out of reach.
Programmes span diplomas through to master’s degrees, with fees starting from $12,000 per year, positioning SIT among the country’s most affordable tertiary providers.
“This initiative is about creating realistic, high-quality education pathways for work visa families who are already contributing to New Zealand’s communities and workforce,” said Riza Ambadar, SIT’s International Manager.
The programmes are open to students aged 18 and over where a parent or spouse holds a valid New Zealand work visa, supporting both immediate study opportunities and long-term settlement.
Local leaders say the initiative will strengthen regional skills and help families establish themselves in the South.
“Affordable education options such as this help families put down roots and build a future here while supporting regional development,” said Hon Penny Simmonds, MP for Invercargill and Minister for Tertiary Education.
Strong foundations for growth
The SIT initiative comes as Southland records some of the strongest economic indicators in the country. Recent figures show the region has achieved significant GDP growth, supported largely by its key industries, while also reaching the highest GDP per capita nationally.
Southland’s economy continues to be driven by sectors including agriculture, energy, manufacturing, tourism and emerging industries, creating diverse career opportunities.
MP for Southland, Joseph Mooney, says the region offers strong prospects for those wanting to build a career and lifestyle.
“From farming, to tourism, manufacturing, industry, space, and energy, just to name some, people can build an exciting career and get ahead.”
“Our environment is sensational. From our bountiful coast to up in the high-country, Southland is an amazingly rich region when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors and being inspired by nature.”
Mr Mooney said the strength of the region lies in its people.
“Our people are pragmatic, hard-working folks from a variety of backgrounds. We’re proud of our region and it shows through in our fantastic community spirit, innovative thinking and ability to get things done.”
Invercargill Mayor, Tom Campbell, says the region’s focus on growth and its strong infrastructure make it attractive for business and new residents.
“We are very growth focussed and work to remove barriers to new businesses.“
“Southland has strong infrastructure, with excess capacity, which means business opportunities can be leveraged without the need for major investment in non-value adding requirements.”
Mr Campbell also highlighted the region’s community values. “We have a welcoming culture and especially to new migrants.”
Building a sustainable future workforce
Great South CEO Chami Abeysinghe says the region’s economic success reflects collaboration across industries, communities, and education providers.
“What’s really encouraging is that it’s not a one-off, it’s built on solid foundations that position us well for continued growth.”
Mrs Abeysinghe says the focus now is on long-term sustainability.
“That means continuing to back our key sectors like agriculture, aquaculture, energy, and tourism, while also creating space for new industries to emerge, particularly in areas like renewable energy, data, and advanced manufacturing.”
She said investing in skills and partnerships will be critical — with SIT playing a central role. “That’s where SIT comes in. They play a critical role in building our skilled workforce and supporting partnerships as we drive these economic enablers,” she says.
Mrs Abeysinghe says Southland offers a compelling lifestyle alongside economic opportunity.
“Southland is an increasingly attractive place to live, study and build a career. We offer a strong sense of community, affordable living, and access to world-class natural environments, alongside real opportunities to be part of innovative and future-focused industries.”
“Ultimately, sustained growth for Southland is about more than just economic indicators. It’s about creating a place where people and businesses can thrive, where there are opportunities to learn, work and live well.”
