Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) hosted His Excellency, Mr Sakias Tameo, Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) High Commissioner to New Zealand, at their Christchurch campus last week to discuss increasing collaboration in education.

SIT’s Hornby campus hosted Mr Tameo on Thursday 15th May, where he was shown some SIT programmes in action. Head of Faculty, Hamish Small, said it was a pleasure to meet with Mr Tameo.

“The meeting provided the opportunity for discussion on strengthening our relationship and moving forward, increasing our offshore partnering in the Pacific region… Mr Tameo was very positive about SIT programme delivery and subject options available.”

Mr Small said that the commissioner was especially interested in SIT’s trades, nursing and agriculture programmes, “which are real focus points for them”. With the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea due to visit New Zealand this year, Mr Tameo was enthusiastic about bringing him as far south as SIT Invercargill and Telford agricultural campus at Balclutha.

Mr Small concluded that the meeting could extend SIT’s current relationship and lead to more new opportunities of collaboration opening with PNG, in which case, “SIT is happy to explore further initiatives and linkages with Papua New Guinea institutions and people”.
