Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology student wins 3-minute Thesis Contest

SIT Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology student, Huaihua (Michael) Zhou, won the ‘3-Minute Thesis Contest’. Michael completed his English programme last year and joined SIT in 2019.

His project/thesis the 'Isabella Street Wastewater Pipe Renewal Project' is in line with Invercargill city council’s (ICC) 2018-2028 Long Term Plan to upgrade ageing wastewater pipelines of Isabella Street in Invercargill.

It highlighted that the improvement of the ageing pipe network is essential due to the continuously increasing population of Invercargill and urban development, and it is also beneficial for residents who will face challenges of climate change in the future.

The project is conducted in two aspects, to develop a performance assessment approach for the existing pipe network and to implement the renewal process of sewer mains on Isabella street. The performance assessment approach includes the asset data analysis, pipeline criticality grading, pipeline inspection methods and evaluation criteria. The sewer pipe renewal process includes the selection of pipe materials, pipe size design, pipe hydraulic design, pipe layout design and construction plan management. The results of the project ensure that the wastewater pipeline on Isabella Street will provide the community with satisfactory sewer services for the next 100 years.

Another wonderful first for Trades and Technology faculty at the Southern Insitute of Technology.
