Murihiku Trades Academy and Hokonui Tertiary High School in partnership with Southern Institute of Technology provides practical trades and career options to Southland secondary school students.

Students can try practical and hands-on training programmes that contribute towards their NCEA Level 2 and Level 3. Our programmes help you get ready for higher level study, apprenticeships or a job.

Vocational Pathways

Vocational Pathways

Murihiku Trades Academy and the Hokonui Tertiary High School programmes are based on the Vocational Pathways developed by industry and education providers to match your learning to the world of work. 

The Vocational Pathways will help secondary school students get at least 20 sector –related credits towards NCEA Level 2 or Level 3 and a Vocational Pathway Endorsement Award.

Achieving credits towards Vocational Pathways means you are developing foundation skills and knowledge in areas that employers’ value.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in studying any of the programmes in this guide, you and your family should contact your teacher or career advisors at school to discuss if this is the right option for you.

What do you need to be accepted into one of these programmes?

  • ✓ You need to be in Year 12 or Year 13 at secondary school
  • ✓ You need to be motivated to learn new skills You should be enthusiastic and ready to make a start on one of the career pathways which are outlined in this guide
  • ✓ You should have NCEA Level 1 including literacy and numeracy (although there are sometimes exceptions to this)
  • ✓ You need to fill in a SIT Trades Academy application form and provide a verified copy your birth certificate
  • ✓ Your school must support your application
