This programme would suit someone who likes to work with their hands and enjoys problem solving in an industry with technology that is constantly being updated. Students learn basic engineering skills and how engines, gear boxes, differentials and brakes, etc work. Our training is a prerequisite for starting apprenticeships in Automotive Engineering, Automotive Engineering (Heavy Equipment) Automotive Electrical Engineering, Automotive Machining and Motorcycle Engineering.
40 weeks full time
3 days class time, 2 days work experience
The Certificate in Construction course covers carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction skills. Every class builds a house from scratch, with practical sessions being alternated with classroom learning. Classes are 3 days per week and students are encouraged to seek work experience with an employer for the other 2 days. This course allows students to work through a lot of the theory units required for their building apprenticeship, which should help them get through their apprenticeship faster.
Graduates of this programme will have knowledge and skills required to enter the electrical engineering and related industries, and be able to employ safe working practices appropriate to these industries. Graduates will be competent in a wide range of relevant industry skills. Students will be trained in the skills and knowledge appropriate, as a first stage of training that will lead to qualifications in electrical engineering, electronics, or electronic security and related trades.
17 weeks full time or 34 weeks part time

Become a choreographer, an entertainer, a coach and a mentor.
You will develop the skills and knowledge from industry experts to become a great group fitness instructor. Our blended delivery model includes distance learning, classroom sessions and weekly practical classes, offering you flexibility and support so you can be the best!
The course covers fitness fundamentals, mechanics of music, group communication and control, creating choreography, delivering a dynamic performance and much more.
This fun course can be undertaken as a stand-alone course, or it can be added to our Certificate in Personal Training as an additional specialist certificate.
12 weeks - online learning with an evening class once a week and assessments completed online.
This is a Blended Delivery programme, so students will do study both online and through evening classes held once a week at the SIT Christchurch campus (60 Waterloo Road, Hornby), and assessments completed online.
Landscape Design combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One purpose of landscape design is to blend houses or buildings into the natural surroundings. To work toward a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of design principles and plants.
This programme aims to provide students with the know-how to undertake a range of landscape design activities and associated operations within the horticultural sector at an entry tradesperson level. It is comprised of two modules that include unit standards at Level 3 and Level 4. You will gain skills and knowledge that will prepare you for employment in the horticultural industry, specifically landscape design.
40 weeks for people who have completed the prerequisite 8 units of the National Certificate
Designed for people who have already developed or wish to develop a higher level of competence in mental health support work than is covered in the National Certificate. These mental health support workers may have more seniority in the workplace, carry a higher level of responsibility, and engage in more complex relationships with consumers/tangata whai ora. They may also lead a team of mental health workers.
One year full time
This qualification is designed for learners who wish to enter mental health and addiction support work, or who already work as paid or unpaid mental health and addiction support workers under supervision. People completing this qualification will meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health’s (2008) Let's get real framework at the essential level of performance.
22 weeks full time - 3 days per week class time, 2 days work experience
This programme would suit anyone who is passionate about cars and has some artistic flair. This pre employment programme with an emphasis on motorbody industry skills is intended to prepare people for an apprenticeship in the motorbody industry. Our training can lead to careers in panel beating, refinishing, coach building and restoration. The creative aspects of potential employment are custom car building, painting and air brushing. This programme is the industry standard, and employers offering apprenticeships prefer pre trade trained students.
34 weeks full time
This programme aims to produce graduates who understand and can apply the key components of exercise and fitness in a professional manner.
Students will gain a strong scientific understanding of fitness, coupled with the ability to apply this knowledge in the contexts of individual, local and national needs. They will also gain expertise in issues relating to managing people, and fitness facilities.
Intakes are 12 weeks long.
This is a Blended Delivery programme, so students will do study both on line and through a series of workshops. Workshops will be held at the SIT Christchurch campus (60 Waterloo Road, Hornby) and will run for 8 hours per day, plus an hour for lunch. The workshops will allow students the opportunity to complete some assessment work in class.
Intakes are 17 weeks long.
This is a Blended Delivery programme, so students will do study both online and through a series of workshops. The workshops will allow students the opportunity to complete some assessment work in class.
40 weeks full time - three days per week class time, two days per week work experience
This programme is designed for those wishing to enter the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. The units covered are designed to give practical and theory based skills in refrigeration, air conditioning and electrical work. Although the programme is a pre apprenticeship programme it also attracts more mature students who may wish to enter the industry as a technician. The successful students can gain a maximum of 20 credits towards the Certification of Refrigeration Engineer.
