Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Learn to read and write music from entry level
  • Students will be given weekly one on one tuition on their chosen instrument
  • Contribute to music composition and arrangements
  • Communicate effectively with peers, tutors and work cohesively within a band environment
  • Organize and implement personal and group practice routine
  • Perform music with confidence and ability for an audience
  • Demonstrate rudimentary technical ability on a musical instrument(s)
  • Use music creation and sound reinforcement technology safely and efficiently
  • Apply a broad range of research skills to inform own music practice
  • To log and reflect upon personal musical development
  • Use a range of personal and interpersonal skills to work in the music industry
  • Apply understanding of the music industry to develop own career plan

Compulsory - student must complete 60 credits            

MMT210 Written Communications

  • This paper aims to develop basic writing skills necessary for successful performance on this programme, future courses or in the workplace.

MMT220 Keyboard Skills

  • This paper aims to develop students keyboard skills from an entry level while developing and utilising musical theory.

MMT230 Ensemble

  • This paper aims to develop the ability to participate in contemporary music ensembles and contribute to the preparation of musical performances. Students will be allocated an instrument tutor and will receive one-on-one lessons to develop technical skills on their chosen instrument major.

MMT240 Principles of Sound and Music Technology

  • Students will learn about rudimentary principles of sound in relation to performing arts technology. They will also learn about the development of contemporary electronic recording equipment.

MMT250 Live Sound and Event Technology

  • This paper aims to provide a basic understanding of the development of contemporary electronic musical equipment. They will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of the use of P.A. equipment and microphone handling.

MMT260 Music Theory and Aural

  • Students will learn introductory music theory and develop aural recognition skills.

MMT270 Composition

  • Students will learn to compose a short piece of music, displaying a basic understanding of the tools available to the songwriter, putting a rhythm to words with rhyme schemes, syllable templates, and scansion.

MMT280 Vocal Group

  • This paper aims for students to be able to demonstrate competent singing participation in a vocal group. This course aims to develop group singing skills including part-singing, to develop rehearsal techniques and performance.

MMT290 Performance Major

  • This paper aims for students to demonstrate a fundamental understanding and performance ability on their chosen major instrument.

Graduates will be able to demonstrate basic music and music technology skills and gain further skills and knowledge to improve their educational and employment pathways.

The programme recognises the importance of applying core capabilities such as confidence, basic knowledge and skills, and literacy and numeracy, in a range of familiar music contexts.

Language Requirements
Formal English language entry criteria are not applicable for this Level 2 programme, however students should be proficient in the English language (both written and spoken).

To satisfactorily complete New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2) and be awarded this qualification the student must have successfully: -

  • Achieved all of the graduate outcomes in the graduate profile showing competence to a minimum of 60 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2) programme.
  • Completed required practical and theoretical course work and assignments.

The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2) programme full-time over 19 tutorial weeks or part-time over two years.

(Please note; students failing to attend for 80% of timetabled programme hours may forfeit zero fees entitlement)

Classes are held Monday to Friday, 9.00am-4.00pm at SIT's Te Rau o Te Huia (Creative Centre) (Tay St)
