Important Notice:

  • Please be aware that for all ACCY coded courses, students will be required to be on-campus (i.e. in Invercargill or Queenstown) for at least one or two assessments.
  • BSNS coded courses do not have on-campus requirements, but you may have to completed online assessments at a time set by the institution. 
  • Some assessments in this programme may also require you to work in groups. 
  • Hyflex applications for this programme close one week prior to the start of the programme. On-campus applications may be accepted after this date.

The Bachelor of Accounting aims to provide Aotearoa New Zealand with people who are equipped with knowledge, technical and professional skills in the field of accounting and can apply the knowledge and skills in an ethical, socially responsible and sustainable way in a variety of business settings that aligns to Nga Kaupapa o te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Graduates of the three-year, full-time (or equivalent part-time) programme will be able to operate in accounting related roles for a range of industries and organisations at both operational and strategic levels. Employment pathways for graduates include roles in accounting such as: financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, treasury, banking and finance, risk management, business consultancy, across the private and public sector.

The NZQA approved Bachelor of Accounting meets the criteria and is fully accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and Chartered Practising Accountant Australia (CPA).

Akonga who have completed the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5) Accounting Strand can be credited with the first year of the Bachelor of Accounting and may continue study from level 6.

* All courses are 15 credits except ACCY7104 which is a 30 credit course.

Entry requirements

To apply, you must be at least 16 years old when the programme begins and meet one of the following:

  • University Entrance (NCEA Level 3), including:
  • 14 credits in each of three approved Level 3 subjects
  • Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, including 5 credits in reading and 5 in writing
  • Numeracy: 10 credits at Level 1 or above from approved achievement standards, or all three numeracy unit standards: 26623, 26626 and 26627
  • An equivalent secondary school qualification that meets New Zealand University Entrance requirements, or
  • An approved Level 4 or higher qualification with a relevant pathway

Special admission

If you’re 20 or older when the semester begins and don’t meet the standard entry requirements, you may apply for special admission.

You’ll need to demonstrate that you are prepared and have the ability to succeed in the programme. Admission is at the discretion of the Programme Leader.

Language and literacy requirements

All applicants must demonstrate the language and literacy skills required for the programme, equivalent to:

  • 10 NCEA literacy credits at Level 2 or above, including:
    • 5 credits in reading
    • 5 credits in writing

If you can’t provide this evidence, you may be asked to demonstrate your ability through an approved proficiency test or an equivalent recognised under NZQA requirements.

English language requirements

International applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency:

  • IELTS Academic: 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5, from one test taken within the previous two years, or
  • An equivalent English language qualification accepted under NZQA requirements
