Course Outline

This programme aims to:

  • Provide international students with the advanced business knowledge, skills and competence required for business operations, including planning, coordinating, supervisory and other business related roles.
  • Assist international stuents to gain skills, knowledge and competence required to undertake a range of high level business activities and carry out a mix of specialised operations involving a degree of self-directed work and supervision of processes and people.

Course Content

The programme is made up of the following unit standards:

 

US 1993 – Manage small business operations (Level 6) 5 credits

This unit standard is for people who own or, seek to own, or participate in the management of small business operations. People credited with this unit standard are able to: assess location and layout of physical facilities; plan and control production of goods and/or services; assess staffing needs; manage merchandising; and formulate and implement marketing strategies.

 

US 2930 – Develop and coordinate marketing strategies (Level 6) 10 credits

This unit standard is for people who have or seek responsibility for, or provide advice for, developing the strategic direction and scope of marketing activities. People credited with this unit standard are able to analyse and assess marketing performance and current strategic position, and develop and evaluate strategic alternatives to meet specific marketing objectives. They are also able to select marketing strategies and produce strategic marketing plans that meet organisational and marketing objectives.

 

US 6412 – Investigate and evaluate small business franchising options (Level 6) 10 credits

This unit standard is relevant for evaluation of franchising as an option for small business operations, and for providing advice for prospective franchisers and franchisees. People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify the core elements of business franchise ventures; determine the essential requirements for establishing franchise business operations; and evaluate franchise proposals.

 

US 9741 – Demonstrate knowledge of change management (Level 6) 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe current schools of thought that contribute to change management in organisations; demonstrate knowledge of managing the change process; and demonstrate knowledge of change processes and methods.

 

US 11624 – Demonstrate and apply knowledge of financial analysis (Level 5) 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the objectives and limitations of analysis of financial statements; calculate ratios to measure profitability, asset utilisation, working capital management, long-term financial stability, and financial markets; report to management on the results of financial analysis; and demonstrate and apply knowledge of the solvency test.

 

US 11633 – Apply the law of contract to a given fact situation (Level 5) 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: define a contract; apply the law relating to the formation of a contract; apply the law which may invalidate a contract or render it unenforceable; apply the law of discharge of contract; and describe the remedies available for a breach of contract.

 

US 23912 – Conduct an environmental analysis for an organisation (Level 6) 10 credits (WP)

People credited with this standard are able to conduct an environmental analysis for an organisation.

 

US 25778 - Manage risk in an organisation (Level 6) 10 credits (WP)

People credited with this standard are able to: identify context to be taken into account when managing risk; develop a risk management framework in an organisation; assess risks in an organisation; and identify options for the treatment of risks, and monitor treatments. This unit standard is for people who have or seek responsibility for the management of risk at a top organisational level; and for managers who make, or contribute to making, risk management decisions, and who are required to commission or brief professional and technical experts in the field of risk management and to evaluate their recommendations or findings.

 

US 2928 - Establish quality standards and customer service strategies for marketing operations (Level 6) 7 credits

This unit standard is for people who have, or seek responsibility for, or provide advice for, establishing quality and customer service standards for marketing activities. People credited with this unit standard are able to: define quality and customer service in relation to marketing activities; assess the influences of quality and customer service on marketing mix decisions; and establish quality standards and customer service strategies for marketing operations.

 

US 1987 - Develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships (Level 5) 5 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships in accordance with organisational requirements.

 

US 27764 - Envision a future for an organisation (Level 6) 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to envision a future for an organisation.

 

US 9732 - Demonstrate knowledge of strategic management concepts for organisational planning and development (Level 5) 10 credits 

People credited with this standard are able to: describe the role of strategy and strategy formulation in organisational planning and development; identify and evaluate strategies for development of the organisation; and identify resources and capabilities of a specific organisation in relation to its external environment.

 

US 9735 - Demonstrate knowledge of theory in relation to management in organisations (Level 6) 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of theory of organisation, motivation, and leadership in relation to management in organisations.

 

US 9685 - Write an analytical report   (Level 5) 5 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to select and organise information, write introductory section(s), body and summary of the report and produce the report according to specified standard format.

At the completion of this programme you will be able to gain employment in business related roles, or possibly continue with further study with the Bachelor of Commerce (at our Invercargill campus) or Postgraduate Diploma in Business Enterprise (offered on campus or via SIT2LRN).

CROSS CREDITS

Students who have previously completed any of the above units at another learning institution can apply to have the unit(s) cross credited to their record of learning at SIT.  This is done by filling in a cross credit application form and attaching proof of achievement. The cross credit application form is available on MySIT or from the Programme Administrator on 0800 748 257 ext. 3337.

  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake unless a transfer is requested (conditions apply; see FAQs).
  • Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

Assessments

Assessments for this course typically include researched essays, analytical business reports and practical assessments based on actual workplace experience. There are no exams for this course.

 

Each unit standard consists of several assignments which must be completed to be deemed competent in the unit standard.  The number of assignments in each unit varies.  There are set assignment due dates which students must meet.  Workplace (WP) access is required to complete some assessments.

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $6.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus a non-refundable administration fee of $50.00 for each application processed, and the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Application Criteria

  • All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in business management and have academic attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme.
  • A current CV and record of learning should be submitted with initial application form.
  • A minimum of 18 years of age, with a minimum of 4 years secondary education. School leavers should have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in each of four subjects.
  • Open entry to applicants over 20 with appropriate experience and aptitude.
  • Admission may also be granted in special cases by relevant work experience and/or completion of National Diploma in Business (Level 5).
  • Students are advised that some unit standards from NDB5 are also in NDB6. In order to have these unit standards cross credited students are required to complete the relevant form and submit it along with their corresponding record of learning.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, must provide evidence of achieving an IELTS Academic English language test overall score of 6.0.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the programme and be eligible for the award of the qualification 'National Diploma in Business Level 6' they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved 120 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

The National Diploma will be awarded directly by NZQA on attainment of 120 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate's NZQA official record of learning.
