Southern English Language Institute offers a full-time Intensive English language certificate for speakers of other languages.

The Institute offers a full time intensive English language course for speakers of other languages. You may begin study on any Monday morning during the academic year and study for as many weeks as you choose.

9.00 am until 3.00 pm Monday to Thursday

9.00 am until 12 noon Friday

(23 hours per week)

Intensive English Language Programm

Morning programme
You will study General English every morning from 9.00am - 12noon. The morning programme is skills based often with a thematic approach.

General English content
The programme seeks to improve your English language skills through:

Building grammatical and structural English and vocabulary using a thematic approach
Developing conversational, discussion and social skills
Questioning, using interviews and role plays
Pronunciation practice
Giving directions and instructions
Reading a variety of text
Writing in a range of genres

Afternoon programme
From 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm opportunities are provided to:

Continue General English study with a strong oral based programme
Develop skills and confidence in project work and assignment writing, discussing and offering options, building a broad vocabulary base across a variety of topics
One to one tuition is available at extra cost.

IELTS Preparation Classes

There is also a IELTS preparation class scheduled in the afternoon session, which is successful in preparing students for further academic study here at SIT.

Activities

All international students are encouraged to participate in recreational community or sports based activities. During winter opportunities are available to students to participate in ski trips.

Classes

Classes are small and friendly with caring and professional staff. You are encouraged to meet with the staff or student adviser to discuss your progress and needs.

Assessment

You will be carefully assessed on entry and throughout the course. A written progress report is given each semester. At the end of your course, you will receive a Southern Institute of Technology attendance certificate and a report on your proficiency in English.

Fees

There is a one-time application fee of NZ$150.00. This fee is non-refundable.

English language fees are NZ$320.00 per week. This covers 23 hours of English study as detailed above. Promotions and special offers are available through your local education agent.

Remember that you may begin study on any Monday morning and study for as many weeks as you wish.

Insurance will be compulsory with any enrolment.
