Graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Business (L5) Human Resource Management strand will have the skills and knowledge to be employed in a variety of business entities in entry-level Human Resource roles such as:

  • HR administrator, 
  • HR assistant, 
  • HR coordinator. 

The skills and knowledge can also be applied to supervisory or first line management roles.

Application criteria

To apply for the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 5), you must be at least 16 years old when the programme begins, or have an approved Early Release Exemption.

You’ll also need to meet one of the following:

  • NCEA Level 2, including:
  • 8 literacy credits at Level 2 or above
  • 14 numeracy credits at Level 1 or above
  • An equivalent qualification, or
  • An approved Level 3 or higher qualification with a relevant pathway

Discretionary admission

If you don’t meet the standard entry requirements but believe you’re prepared to study at this level, you may apply for discretionary admission.

You’ll need to demonstrate that you have the ability and preparation to succeed in the programme. Admission is at the discretion of the relevant academic authority.

Programme-specific requirements

There are no additional programme-specific entry requirements.

Language and literacy requirements

All applicants must demonstrate the language and literacy skills needed for the programme. This is normally shown through:

  • 8 NCEA literacy credits at Level 2 or above

If you can’t provide this evidence, you may be asked to demonstrate your ability through an approved proficiency test or an equivalent recognised under NZQA requirements.

English language requirements

International applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

You’ll need:

  • IELTS Academic: 5.5 overall, with no band below 5.0, from one test taken within the previous two years, or
  • An equivalent English language qualification accepted under NZQA requirements
