Dr Mark Baynes

Mark Baynes’ background is in early music in the UK. His doctoral research focused on developing an analytical model used to understand music by exploring consonance and dissonance pertaining to melody, harmony, rhythm, organic unity and genre. Mark is a presenter of 95bFM's The Jazz Show, writes the X-Factory column for NZ Musician Magazine, and has been published in Downbeat (US).

Mark has expertise semiotics, improvisation, composition, and performance. He runs Networks of Expertise workshops teaching popular music analysis to teachers, and is currently a member of the Music Subject Experts Group, reviewing achievement standards at secondary school level at all NCEA levels.

Mark recorded with Goldsmith Baynes, a track called Tīpuna, released as part of the Waiata Anthems playlist 2021 and featured for the Aotearoa Music Awards Ceremony 2021. Also in 2021, Mark has been writing and performing extensively with Mireya Ramos (Flor de Toloache).

Outreach/Engagement/Impact

Mark Baynes is a British jazz pianist and composer, who has performed alongside Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea), King Kapisi, Che-Fu, Tony Christie (UK), Anika Moa, Don McGlashan, the APO, a Broadway cast, and at Glastonbury Festival (UK), AWME (AU), the Middle East and Canada as a pianist and Musical Director. Mark was a guest arranger for a RNZB production of Hansel and Gretel (recorded by the NZSO), written by composer Claire Cowan (Aotearoa Music Awards 2021 Finalist). In 2021 he collaborated with Troy Kingi on an upcoming single, and composed an album with Latin GRAMMY Award Winner Mireya Ramos (NYC).
