BF101 Fashion Design Development
As an introduction to design in fashion, this paper presents students with the basic elements, principles and processes of design development in relation to the fashion industry. Students will gain an understanding of the essential stages through the design development process and explore the variety of ways to develop and present their design ideas. The students will also learn the requirements necessary for presenting their designs for garment production. Designing ranges for children and men or women will give students skills in fulfilling the requirements of a variety of briefs.
BF103 Fashion Production
Students will become familiar with the machinery, techniques and terminology used in the construction area of the fashion industry and will produce basic quality garments constructed from their own patterns. Students will develop skills in fundamental block drafting and garment construction techniques for a variety of garment types including a top and a skirt or trousers. They will gain skills in developing patterns for, and constructing, a variety of sleeves, pockets and collars as well as the insertion of fastenings and specification and costing requirements. To incorporate garment design features, students will develop skills in block manipulation.
BF105 Fashion Illustration and Imagery 1
This paper aims to teach students the fundamental skills for fashion illustration in a variety of media enabling them to present fashion figures in a selection of 2D forms. Students will develop skills in colour theory and the basic principles of design as well as developing knowledge in computer generated technical drawings providing the basis for students to create a portfolio of fashion in 2D form.
BF106 Textile Art and Technology
This paper introduces students to textiles as both materials and sources of inspiration for artistic design practice. Students will develop knowledge of textile history, explore and evaluate current textile technologies, gain a basic understanding of textile composition and incorporate this knowledge of textile composition and manipulation into their own fashion creations. Knowledge and skills gained from completing this paper will be applied throughout the following design, production and costume projects.
BF107 History and Culture of Fashion 1
This paper provides knowledge on the history and cultural aspects surrounding costume from Ancient Mesopotamia to the 20th Century. Students will examine historical contexts and how they can influence current fashion and design, gaining an understanding of what impact the socio-cultural environment and trends have on fashion and fashion’s capacity to act as an area of social and cultural communication.
BF108 Design and Production 1 (Client)
This paper further develops skills in the basic elements and principles of design development in relation to designing for a real client along with developing skills in the construction of made-to-measure jackets and eveningwear. Students will experiment with a variety of media for inspiration and story board presentation and discuss how these forms of inspiration work through and hold together a fashion range. Students will develop jacket blocks, manipulate the blocks to portray design features, and construct the jackets using a variety of specialised materials and machinery. Students will be introduced to drape pattern development and produce evening wear by this method. The theories underpinning anthropometry, sizing and grading will be covered in detail and students will discuss, evaluate, implement and justify their choice of sizing and grading measurements.
BF109 Design and Production 2 (Corset, Swimwear, Lingerie)
This paper follows on from previous papers further developing skills in design, pattern development, garment construction and the use of more complex workroom equipment. Students get the opportunity to produce items designed when they develop patterns for a corset and either lingerie or swimwear then assemble these items utilising appropriate construction accessories and specialised garment construction machinery. Special consideration is given to knitted fabrics as students discuss, evaluate and experiment with knitted fabrics in relation to design development, pattern development and garment production. Students will learn how to develop and manipulate complex patterns as well as discover alternative strategies and processes for apparel production. Students will further develop their understanding of the requirements of portfolio presentation and technical drawing for fashion garments when they use this format to present their ranges.
GEN100 Introduction to Academic Skills
This paper aims to provide students with an introduction to academic writing and presentation requirements for degree level study. It will provide students with the necessary skills to support their learning in other papers in the areas of writing, communicating, and presenting. The use of relevant technology in academic study for both delivery of information and as a source of information is also an element of this paper.
BF205 Fashion Illustration and Imagery 2
This paper builds on knowledge acquired in BF105 and aims to develop students’ skills in the production of accurate computer generated technical drawings of their own designs for specification sheets. The paper further develops skills in fashion imagery and presentation enabling students to create a professionally presented fashion illustration portfolio containing 2D images in a variety of media. Students will apply the illustration and imagery skills gained from completing this paper in the following design development and costume papers.
BF206 History and Culture of Fashion 2
This paper builds on the knowledge acquired in Media Culture 1 with a deeper look into the fashion industry. As well as gaining a basic understanding of the history of costume up to the 20th Century students will also examine historical contexts and how they can influence current contemporary fashion and design. Students will gain an understanding of what impact the socio-cultural environment and trends have on fashion and fashion’s capacity to act as an area of social and cultural communication. Students will take a closer look at fashion in the New Zealand culture, Māori design and the influence the Treaty of Waitangi has on design in New Zealand. Sustainability and other ethical issues associated with the fashion industry are identified and their resolution is considered. Students will incorporate the knowledge gained from completing this paper into the design development, production and costume papers that follow.
BF207 Computer Aided Pattern Development
This paper gives students the opportunity to further explore the design process through technical pattern-making and three-dimensional visualisation and enables students to gain a sound interactive knowledge of computer aided pattern development applicable to product design and production within the fashion industry. Students will use a CAD system to develop blocks, manipulate blocks, produce lay plans and grade patterns. Students will have the opportunity to critically analyse the use of CAD systems and the impact these have on the fashion industry.
BF210 Introduction to Costume
Following on from previous design and production papers, this paper extends the students’ ability to employ the elements, principles and processes of design while exercising their creative problem solving skills during a costume design and production project. Students will gain an understanding of the artistic and technical knowledge and skills necessary for designing garments for screen or stage. Consideration also needs to be given to the history and culture of fashion to ensure relevant socio-cultural influences are considered during the design and production phases of this project.

BF211 Design and Production 3 (Competition Wear)
This paper is focused on strengthening students’ creative inquiry abilities to design and produce garments for entering into competitions. Emphasis is placed on developing design solutions for a specific competition brief while continuing to encourage a creative process by utilising an experimental, problem solving approach. Students will develop skills in utilising the design development process including, inspiration, fabric sourcing, analysis of necessary practical elements, and design development through to working drawing presentation while meeting the competition category criteria.
BF213 Design and Production 4 (Unconventional)
In this paper, students will utilise and expand their design development, pattern development and garment construction skills to produce a feature garment. A strong emphasis will be placed on socio-cultural contexts as the students analyse their own socio-cultural background and values, and consider the influence these have on their design choices. Students will challenge their understanding of material use for fashion and develop skills in researching, sourcing and creating unconventional textiles while designing a feature outfit using non-standard materials and/or self-developed fabrics. Students experiment with unconventional textiles and implement developed problem solving skills to produce patterns for, and construct, a feature garment while employing a variety of unconventional construction methods.
BF214 Specialised Pattern Making Techniques
This paper enables students to extend their skills and knowledge in pattern making techniques for fashion, costume and avant-garde. Students will undertake extensive block manipulation to create complex patterns and will produce a variety of garment features along with exploring unconventional patternmaking techniques. To increase their skills in bespoke pattern development, students will learn to take both basic and complex measurements of the human body and learn how to apply those to block and pattern development.
BF216 Specialised Construction Techniques
This paper focuses on developing students’ skills in a wide variety of construction techniques and applications. Students will learn to use a selection of industry relevant machinery on a variety of fabrics. The stitch portfolio developed will become a reference tool for future construction work for the remainder of the programme and will also be a useful reference when working in the industry. The complex construction and tailoring techniques will enable students to further extend themselves during future design and construction projects.
This paper is specifically for students who are new to employment and/or would like to gain work experience in a specific area of their chosen field. They will develop industry specific knowledge and skills while working on-the-job. The tutorial sessions undertaken prepare the students for the work environment and a minimum of 80 hours in the work placement is required to achieve the on-the-job requirements of the paper. Documentation is required in the form of a reflective journal and personally developed learning outcomes related to the work experience.
GEN200 Research and Statistics
This paper aims to prepare the student for professional practice by presenting research as a uniting strategy for practice, theory and scholarship. Students will be introduced to several approaches to research, both qualitative and quantitative. Students will also be assisted to develop skills as a beginning researcher.

BF301 Fashion Design Development (The Collection)
This paper gives the student an opportunity to exercise their research, creativity, creative problem solving and time management skills while extending their ability to work through the key practical design development processes from research through to technical drawing format. To achieve the requirements of the learning outcomes, students will need to draw on knowledge gained from completing previous papers including: communication, design development, illustration, history and culture of fashion, textiles and production. The students are given an opportunity to experience a simulation of industry expectations in both quality and quantity of work produced. Students will design two ‘consecutive season’ ranges aimed at the same target market. These ranges will be coherent, original and rational and presentation will be professionally delivered including specification drawings and illustrations in portfolio format. A range of garments will be produced in the following production paper and presented to the public on completion.
BF302 Fashion Production (The Collection)
This paper builds on students’ skills and knowledge acquired in previous production papers and develops advanced skills to analyse, interpret and critique processes required for the production of original customized garments. Students will demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship in pattern making and garment assembly, and will critically evaluate and resolve problems through research and experimentation. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate personal organisation and time management skills while producing quality garments to industry standards. Students will use complex flat, drape and CAD pattern development techniques and professionally construct the garments for the collection designed in BF301.
The aim of this paper is to provide the opportunity for students to design and produce a collection of costumes that can be used for screen or stage. Students will be able to apply their artistic and technical knowledge and skills in the design and production of garments for costume creation required by the entertainment industry and will demonstrate sensitivity to, knowledge of, and aptitude for the art, craft and processes of moving the script onto the stage. Students acquire a comprehensive knowledge of costume for historical drama, musical theatre, film and television through a developed understanding of dress and textiles and their place within social, historical and dramatic contexts. Applying research skills is essential to ensure the correct cultural influences are considered and students will experiment with an extensive range of materials necessary for producing costumes. To successfully fulfil the learning outcome requirements, students will need to draw on learning gained from previous papers including: media culture, textiles, history and culture of fashion, design development, production, CAD and communications.

BF209 Fashion Marketing and Management
On completion of this paper students will have an understanding of how to manage innovation, creativity and change within the business context. In preparation for contribution to management decisions, students will be presented with the principles and concepts of marketing in the fashion industry gaining insight into factors and forces that can hinder or promote successful fashion businesses. To ensure the subject is understood and used in context, students will research and discuss possibilities for a clothing line (suited to their collection designed in BF301) then critically analyse fashion industry issues relevant to that clothing line. Students will then build a marketing plan for the clothing line. This is an opportunity for students to examine their personal design vision and apply it within the constraints of the commercial requirements of the market place. To successfully fulfil the learning outcomes, as well as employing their understanding of marketing strategies, students are expected to apply their understanding of the cultural and production related theoretical underpinnings. This will be evident and reflected in the justification they offer for their marketing plans.
BF212 Design and Production 5 (Couture)
Students will gain knowledge and skills associated with couture fashion techniques which can be applied to a variety of designs and fabrics. They will utilise these skills as they design and produce an avant-garde item for entry into a national fashion competition. Students will further develop their skills in bespoke fashion as they design and fit the garment to a real client. Research into some of the historical and contemporary couture designers will give the students an understanding of the breadth of the subject and limitless scope of design possibilities.
BF215 Introduction to Business Practice and Management
This paper aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of the business environment, business principles and operations. Students will develop a business proposal aimed at a fashion related event and employ business practice and management skills and knowledge to organise and execute the proposed event. Team work is a main focus of the event management along with communication and partnership options with the wider community.
BF305 Research Project
One other paper to be chosen Level 5 or above, as approved by programme manager.

Applicants under 20 years:
University Entrance - NCEA Level 3 - three subjects at Level 3, made up of:
- 14 credits each, in three NZQA University Entrance approved subjects, and
- Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing, and
- Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of specified achievement standards through a range of subjects, or a package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 – all three required)
Applicants over 20 years
Applicants who are at least 20 years of age when the programme begins, and who can provide evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other experience are welcome to apply.
Notwithstanding the above admissions categories, in exceptional circumstances, a mature aged applicant who can show evidence of ability to succeed in the programme may be considered for admission provided the applicant has successfully completed an approved course or programme, which is deemed to prepare graduates for the required academic standard for entry; or
Have successfully completed SIT’s Certificate in Pattern Making and Garment Construction (Level 3), National Certificate in Clothing Manufacture (Design and Patternmaking); or
Completion of an external or overseas qualification, which is considered to be the equivalent of any of the above qualifications, as approved by the had of fculty.
Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:
- IELTS test – Academic score of 6, with no band score lower than 5.5
- TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) – Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
- TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) – Score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)
- University of Cambridge English Examinations – FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill
- NZCEL – Level 4 with the Academic endorsement
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PtoE (Academic) score of 50
