This programme is for individuals who wish to develop their experience and practice in the production of complex electronic music and performance as a DJ. It provides the music industry with performers who have an extended repertoire of DJ and electronic music production skills to perform competently and creatively.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Apply DJ and electronic music production techniques and processes to produce complex electronic music
  • Apply a range of sound and electronic music hardware and software to produce complex electronic music
  • Apply music and sonic theory to create and produce complex electronic music.  Perform as a DJ to competently and creatively engage an audience
  • Create and produce complex electronic music and other sound-related works
  • Apply research and analytical skills to inform own practice
  • Manage and take responsibility for own professional practice
  • Analyse characteristics of the DJ and electronic music industry to develop own career plan

  • Applicants must have completed the requirements for NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) or have successfully completed the NZ Certificate in DJ and Electronic Music Production Level 4
  • Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme
  • Applicants may be required to attend an audition
  • Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria if they can demonstrate a history of work, industry experience, or (in the opinion of the Programme Leader) could successfully complete the programme
  • Consideration will be given to students who progress through other SIT/MAINZ programme pathways (e.g. Certificate in DJEMP L4, Certificate in Foundation Sound and Music L2, Certificate in Live Sound L4) 
  • Preference will be given to applicants with Merit or Excellence passes in maths, physics and music at, or above, the level specified
  • Providing examples of music production or DJ mixes is also recommended where possible
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 Academic, with no band lower than 5.0

To successfully complete and be awarded the New Zealand Diploma in DJ and Electronic Music Production (Level 5) students must complete the prescribed programme of study and attain a minimum of 120 credits.
