Southland Mike Piper High Performance Centre

The Mike Piper Training Centre (named after a Southland sport’s visionary leader) is the high-performance base of Academy Southland, the Cycling NZ Southern Performance Hub, Netball South’s Southern Steel, the Southland Stags, Rugby Southland’s High-Performance Academy and a variety of other Southland regional sports. The MPTC provides a high-quality training environment with a range of fit-for-purpose equipment and is overseen by Academy Southland. SIT is a Major Sponsor of the Southland Mike Piper High Performance Centre for Professional Athletes.

SIT Zero Fees Velodrome

The SIT Velodrome at ILT Stadium Southland and was New Zealand's very first indoor cycling velodrome. The SIT Zero Fees Velodrome was officially opened on May 26, 2006 and is still the only indoor velodrome in the South Island. The 250-metre international standard track has been the venue for many national and international competitions and meets.

Murihiku Polyfest

The Polyfest Cultural Festival is a celebration of Māori and Pasifika culture in Murihiku-Southland. SIT is a proud sponsor of the event as well as the commitments the Murihiku Maori and Pasifika Cultural Trust seeks to adhere to. These include uplifting and celebrating Maori and Pasifika cultures, making these cultures accessible to all, and providing excellent opportunities for rangatahi (youth) and their whanau. Polyfest is a showcase of cultural performances from Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary School students. SIT is a Sponsor of Murihiku Polyfest.

Young Enterprise Scheme (YES)

'YES' is The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme which sees students set up and run a real business as part of an experiential programme. Each YES company creates their own product or service and brings this to market, taking students through a series of entrepreneurial experiences to help develop 21st century skills in real-world situations. As the regional partner for this initiative, SIT is excited to work with our future business entrepreneurs by assisting these high schoolers to work to their strengths and see that they can achieve their goals in business, which is likely to kick start their study and/or career journey. SIT is a Regional Sponsor for the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES)

Street Smart

Street Smart is a world-class, cognitive based driver programme that aims to positively influence the lives of young kiwis across the country, and help them to become a safer and more aware driver on our roads. The Programme has been developed with the involvement of world-renowned road safety expert, Peter Sheppard. In addition, passionate road safety advocate, Greg Murphy, is our Programme Ambassador. Offering a practical hands-on learning experience, Street Smart is a one-day event providing young drivers and their parents/caregivers the opportunity to undertake supervised driving practice. There is a focus on developing good decision-making strategies for safe driving, including assessing themselves, reading the road environment, resisting peer pressure, managing or eliminating distractions and planning ahead. Street Smart takes place in safe, controlled, off-the-road environments, under the watchful eye of qualified coaches plus the parent/caregiver. This provides the parent the opportunity to also assess themselves, in order to be a better coach and mentor to their teen.

Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel shooter Jennifer O’Connell will have a scan this week to assess a knee injury suffered on Friday night.

The 23-year-old landed painfully on her left leg in the fourth quarter of the Round 5 ANZ Premiership match against Central Pulse and was assisted from the court.

Head coach Reinga Bloxham said it was another cruel blow having lost fellow shooter Georgia Heffernan to a season ending knee injury in Round 3.

“Everyone is feeling really gutted for her because she was improving with every game. The team as a whole was performing a lot stronger with her there so she is going to be a big loss for us to fill,” Bloxham said.

“We really felt that we were right in the contest with the Pulse and felt that our playing performance had really improved each week, so it’s a huge task to have to rebuild that shooting combination and end again.”
