Bachelor of Information Technology graduate Brittney Huxford finished her degree in 2017, moving into a position involving software testing. Having acquired this position through a graduate programme she applied for in her final year at SIT, she counts studying at Southern Institute of Technology as creating fantastic opportunities in the industry which have greatly assisted with her education in IT.
Being one of the students awarded the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia, Brittney was given the opportunity to study and experience living in Japan over a period of eight weeks.
“The PMSA scholarship enabled me to understand how aspects of information technology are handled and studied abroad. This was eye opening to cultural differences – and similarities. It was a fantastic opportunity that allowed for a lot of amazing experiences, networking, and education.”
Throughout her studies at SIT, Brittney also had the opportunity to work with a large southland business through an internship – focusing on mobile application development. This internship contributed towards her work experience for the final year of the course and was useful in understanding software development environments.
Brittney’s experience at SIT was one within a close-knit learning environment.
“There’s a very supportive approach to education at SIT. The course allowed for a lot of experimentation with different IT-related fields from networking, programming, project management, to cybersecurity and more.”
From her original perceptions of an IT career, Brittney realised throughout her studies that there is a lot more than understanding basic computer hardware and programming involved in IT. A lot of focus is placed on making a good user experience, and methodologies for handling development environments. Emphasis is placed on working with the industry and understanding users and Brittney was pushed to think outside the box in this area, which has assisted with making her a well- rounded and skilled IT professional.
Brittney’s future goals include continuing with a career as a software tester, working towards seniority in the field. She also has plans to continue dabbling in development on the side.
Brittney would recommend the Bachelor of Information Technology at SIT to any prospective students looking to acquire a great platform to start from if interested in any jobs in the field of information technology.
