5. Flats and House Rentals
We recommend that you make contact with the International Student Advisor to discuss the process and support available in New Zealand, when beginning to sign contracts for renting. Such contracts include phone, electricity and bond requirements. In ‘flatting' or renting, you rent a house or apartment. In New Zealand, any building where people live together, who are not a family or couple, is called a flat. You are either on your own or with others. Flats are usually unfurnished. You will have your own room, or may share with another. The rent is usually worked out according to the size of the room. All other expenses are divided and cooking meals and cleaning are usually shared. Prices vary from $65 to $150 for one room in Invercargill.
These organisations will assist you in finding what you will be looking for.
