SIT’s involvement with the 2012 Uni Games has seen them come away with the ITP Cup after attending the competitions held in Wellington which ran from Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th of April.

The 19-strong team competed with over 1000 students from Institutes of Technology & Polytechnics (ITPs) and Universities across the country in the event that has been running since 1902, with some teams numbering close to 150.

Peter McDonald, Acting Executive Director, National Events & Projects Manager for University Sport New Zealand says, “We have added the Cup to the group of major awards for the Uni Games to recognise the involvement of Polytechs and other ITPs who participate in the games.”

Wellington City provided first class facilities for the Games, with the recent opening of the new ASB Sports Centre, and the Wellington City Council’s initiative of several all-weather artificial turfs around the city.  USNZ also held an inter-campus "Amazing Race" to finish off the Games which led into the Awards Presentation and Closing Ceremony.

SIT Employment and Activities Officer, Tracey Young says, “It’s a great experience and opportunity for students to compete with students around New Zealand when they may not get that experience locally.”

There were twelve different sports students were able to compete in with SIT sending teams to three disciplines; lawn bowls, netball and touch rugby.  “It was awesome - the students had a great time and were able to see Wellington through social events.  The competition was fierce and fun.”

There were mixed results from the SIT teams' matches however students enjoyed the experience. “We had a student who was selected into the New Zealand Uni Games Tournament team for touch.  Overall we won some, lost some and drew some, but we won in the fun factor.  It was a fun time and crazy busy.”
