A group of Bachelor of Contemporary Music students will soon see the culmination of a year’s work as they complete a five day tour around Central Otago next month.

Third year Bachelor of Contemporary Music student Ashlie Schares says it’s the largest part of their performance major under BCM degree.  “It gives us real world experience with setting up and organising a tour in NZ.  On the academic side we are marked on arrangement, accommodation, advertising, rehearsing schedule, group dynamics and execution of songs.”

The band was required to play at six or more different locations and six different venue types.  “We are going to play at two preschools and a primary school in Arrowtown, Dunstan High School in Alexandra, Golden Gate Lodge pub, Alexandra Centennial Court Motel and AJ Hackett Bungee.

“At the motels we are playing in exchange for free accommodation as all the gigs are for free,” says Ashlie.

Cromwell Golden Gate Lodge manager Glen Christiansen says he is happy to have SIT students back for a second year.  “They’re just great as they’re generally really into it, have great personality and great atmosphere, and it’s a great opportunity to introduce new music.”

The groups are currently rehearsing at least three to four times a week to learn the 25 covers.  “We just trust things will come together - there is a lot of coordination while working together.”

Ashlie says they received a lot of support from each venue they approached, as many had hosted SIT music students in previous years.  Fellow students are also helping out, with members from other years of the music course making up band numbers, whilst Bachelor of Digital Media student Stephanie Alexander designed their advertising material.

The tour is being held from October 15th-19th.
