The annual ‘Sand 2 SIT Duathlon’ has been stepped up this year due to the efforts of SIT Bachelor of Sport and Exercise students.
The duathlon will be held on September 21, beginning at Riverton beach and finishing at the Jellicoe Sea Scouts Hall. It features a 28km bike ride and 7km run. The event is open to students, staff and the public, who can enter as individuals or in teams. Participants need to be over 16 to enter.
The duathlon is run in conjunction with the students’ endurance paper, involving seven students from the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise and two Postgraduate Diploma in Business Enterprise students. In previous years it was a small affair involving a limited number of competitors.
With the aim of creating a bigger and better event, organiser Loren Greenwood says sponsors were contacted to provide prizes for the event and SIT massage students will be providing relief for competitors after the race. “We decided to make this event bigger and involve SIT and the public. We even have prizes for the craziest costume so we want people to get their thinking caps on and come up with an original outfit for the race.”
Loren says they hope to attract between 50-70 people to attend the event which is followed by a barbeque, set to kick off around 2:00pm. "Last year the fastest male time was one hour 30 minutes, the fastest female time was one hour 50 minutes and the average time took around two hours to complete.
"We want to create a successful event that will set a high benchmark for future years."
Online registrations are open now at www.facebook.com/SAND2SIT and close on the 19th of September.
