SIT Nursing student Amanda De Garhnam on placement at Kew Hospital

Invercargill Campus Information

Mayor Tim

On behalf of the City of Invercargill, I would like to welcome you to the Southern Institute of Technology.

The Southern Institute of Technology is the pride of Southland.  It is a Government Tertiary Institution committed to quality education, and I encourage you to make SIT your choice for higher education.

The Institute provides a dynamic, innovative and friendly environment.  The southern hospitality however does not end with just SIT, Invercargill is a safe community that welcomes students and migrants from all over the world.

Invercargill is a great place if you are considering living and working in New Zealand.  Southland’s unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the country.  The region has abundant resources – oil, coal, gas, silicon, wood and dairy.

We actively seek skilled migrants to come join our community.
I look forward to meeting you in Invercargill.

About SIT's Invercargill Campus

SIT’s main campus is located at 133 Tay Street, Invercargill.  On-campus facilities include a student gym, bookshop and cafe, and support services such as a health nurse, counsellor, chaplain, learning assistance centre, disability liaison, Iwi liaison and Pacific Island liaison.

The ‘Downtown’ campus is located on Don Street and it is very much a creative zone, housing our Art, Design, Photography, Film, Animation, Music, Audio, Fashion, Journalism and Drama students.  These areas work closely together, often collaborating for live performances, exhibitions and filming opportunities during the year.

With around 5,000 students studying on campus and another 8,000 around the country studying via SIT2LRN, SIT is big enough to offer variety and a student culture, yet has small class sizes ensuring plenty of hands-on experience.

One of the greatest things about Invercargill is the relatively low cost of living.  If you’re intending to go flatting, you can expect to find a good, warm house for $80-$130 per room, per week (plus expenses).

The Grand Hall of Residence caters for students who wish to live in shared accommodation with meals provided.  LivingSpace Apartments are another option for shared accommodation, with modern, warm, secure facilities and the choice of room, studio or apartment-style living.  Both are only 5-10 minutes walk from our campus.

Invercargill’s world-class sporting facilities include NZ’s only indoor cycling velodrome, brand new water-based hockey turfs on a par with the Beijing Olympics, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a huge indoor stadium.  There are endless sports clubs to join – see the Sport Southland website at http://www.sportsouthland.co.nz/.

As well as having numerous beautiful parks and gardens within the city, Invercargill is the gateway to some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery and destinations including the Southland heartland, Stewart Island, Fiordland, the Catlins and Central Otago.  Visit the Venture Southland Tourism website for more information.

Southland is famous for its ‘southern hospitality’ – you will find the people here are generally warm, friendly and laid-back. From excellent shopping to lively cafes, restaurants and bars, Invercargill has all the benefits of city life, without the traffic jams and long commutes.
