This programme aims to develop a broad theoretical knowledge in the fields of sport and exercise and an holistic understanding of sport and exercise and its importance to the community. It recognises the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi to the New Zealand people and raises awareness of of the implications of the treaty with respect to community and resource management in the fields of sport and exercise. Students will develop a range of practical expertise in the sport and exercise industry by developing a close working relationship with various organisations.

Students are able to exit the Diploma in Sport and Recreation after successful completion of year one, graduating with this Certificate in Sport and Recreation.
Two possible pathways are available: Sports Development / Personal Training, or Outdoor Leadership.
Two years full time
The Diploma in Sport and Recreation is hands-on, practical course where students can specialise in either sports development/personal training or outdoor recreation leadership.
17 weeks full time or 34 weeks part time
Group fitness has to be one of the most exciting areas in fitness. If you are passionate about helping others be the best they can be, then there is no better way of making a real difference than instructing a group fitness class. The awesome atmosphere created from leading a group of enthusiastic participants through a fun and effective workout to music is hard to beat! Become a choreographer, an entertainer, a coach and a mentor.
You will develop the skills and knowledge from industry experts to become a great group fitness instructor. Our blended delivery model includes distance learning, classroom sessions and weekly practical classes, offering you flexibility and support so you can be the best!
The course covers fitness fundamentals, mechanics of music, group communication and control, creating choreography, delivering a dynamic performance and much more.
This fun course can be undertaken as a stand-alone course, or it can be added to our Certificate in Personal Training as an additional specialist certificate.
34 weeks full time
This programme aims to produce graduates who understand and can apply the key components of exercise and fitness in a professional manner.
Students will gain a strong scientific understanding of fitness, coupled with the ability to apply this knowledge in the contexts of individual, local and national needs. They will also gain expertise in issues relating to managing people, and fitness facilities.
Intakes are 14 weeks long.
This certificate will help students gain the skills and knowledge for working or further training in the sports training sector. The content gives athletes and coaches the knowledge to allow themselves and others to achieve their potential. The programme has a strong focus on sport psychology, nutrition and exercise prescription and finding out how the body becomes stronger, fitter and faster when stressed by exercise.
36 weeks full time
This programme aims to produce graduates who understand and are able to apply the key components of exercise and fitness, and demonstrate knowledge of national and local needs in the area of fitness and health. Students will learn to work professionally with all clients, showing sensitivity to their individual needs. Graduates will have a strong scientific understanding of fitness and will be able to apply this knowledge and manage themselves within the context of the fitness industry, with an awareness of the issues relating to managing people and facilities.
