This certificate has been designed to give you fundamental knowledge of the theoretical and practical components of contemporary music and sound engineering. The curriculum has been developed to level 2 unit standards in the following fields of study, music studies, music performance, performing arts technology, sound production and interpersonal communication.
The certificate has been designed as a stand alone qualification at entry level but also provides a lead into the higher level programmes. By starting the programme in July, successful students who want to go on to further study have the opportunity to enrol in a higher level programme starting the following February.

MSE102.2 P.A. set up/microphone handling

MSE102.5 Evolution of contemporary music equipment
MSE103 Pre Entry 3
A minimum of 30 credits are required from the following
MSE103.1 Aural recognition
MSE103.2 Music theory
MSE103.3 Composition
MSE103.4 Vocal group
MSE103.5 Performance major
Graduates will show a developing range of musical skills, on their major instrument as part of an ensemble and/or as a soloist, demonstrate knowledge of New Zealand music industry, public address systems, composition and basic handling of sound equipment. Graduates may elect to continue their music studies at certificate level, move to an allied field of training such as sound engineering/recording, or move into the local industry as performers.
Academic and personal attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme. Preferably four years successful secondary education. An aptitude for and interest in music as a realistic career choice or for personal development. Mature students 20 years of age or over at commencement of the programme are welcome to apply. Applicants may be interviewed to determine their basic competence in spoken and written English.
For students to be deemed to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and be eligible for award of the qualification, Certificate in Music and Sound Engineering (Pre Entry), they should have: Attended for at least 80% of the scheduled classes relating to the programme. Gained competency in each unit standard according to the criteria relating to the programme (60 credits).
