It recognises the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi to the New Zealand people and become aware of the implications of the treaty with respect to community and resource management in the fields of sport and recreation. Students will develop a range of practical expertise in the sport and recreation industry by developing a close working relationship with various organisations.

The National Diploma in Journalism (Multi-media) (Level 5) is the initial qualification for a professional journalist in the specialist area of newspaper journalism. It is a nationally recognised qualification, taught at a journalism school which is supported by foreign correspondent Peter Arnett.
Learning at the Peter Arnett School of Journalism is facilitated by a simulated newsroom environment with individual work stations, newspaper files and a daily news sourcing system. The aim is to create a working environment which enables students to develop skills in news gathering, news writing, meeting deadlines and teamwork. Students will be assigned news rounds and are expected to develop stories for publications. In addition, students will spend four weeks in work experience placements at newspapers around New Zealand.

This programme aims to provide participants who complete the qualification with the skills and knowledge required to operate as a capable technician in the construction industry. These skills include: establishing a design brief, presenting preliminary designs, developing building concepts and preparing working drawings. The programme also aims to develop skills applicable to the wider construction industry, including health and safety plans, quality assurance and construction methodologies.
The Diploma in Sport and Recreation is hands-on, practical course where students can specialise in either sports development/personal training or outdoor recreation leadership.
This qualification is aimed at those who work in the "people" side of business, either through the personnel function, employment relations or the wider area of human resource management.
The aim is to qualify people as line managers, supervisors, section, departmental or branch managers. NZIM has selected a range of papers from the New Zealand Diploma in Business to make up the Diploma in Management. You need to do four compulsory and choose two optional papers to complete this qualification. These papers are taken from the basket of papers available for the New Zealand Diploma in Business as approved by the NZQA. This means that students can gain certification in the NZIM Diploma in Management while they study towards the New Zealand Diploma in Business, but must ensure that they satisfy all course and individual paper prerequisites to gain certification in both qualifications. NZIM charge a fee to register each paper.

This 18 month programme prepares students to apply for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an Enrolled Nurse. Students gain knowledge and skills in nursing, social science, and structure and function of the human body. They will learn skills in simulated learning environments which they then apply on placements in clinical practice. During the programme students will undertake a range of clinical courses in different health care settings including rehabilitation, acute care and mental health.
The Diploma in Beauty Therapy (Level 5) will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of treatments at a professional level within the commercial environment.

Te Reo Maori is developed further to speak confidently at an intermediate level in conversations and every day situations. You will have a greater understanding of ‘Nga Tikanga Maori' from both a traditional and contemporary context. The programme is made up of four wahanga (sections) Te Hau Rawhiti - The East, Te Hau Raki - The North, Te Hau a Uru - The West, and Te Hau Tonga - The South. Te Hau Rawhiti has a descriptive focus, Te Hau Raki contains a language of investigation, Te Hau a Uru begins with a focus on retelling stories and rekindling memories and Te Hau Tonga continues to focus on present happenings and occurrences.
Students will work with information systems to meet prescribed specifications and needs within an organisational context. They will provide information systems support, including selecting and configuring operating systems, networks and software components of an organisation's information system.

Following on from the National Certificates in Hospitality (Cookery) Levels 2, 3 and 4, this Level 5 Diploma programme teaches advanced cookery skills, and the expertise needed for working and supervising to a senior level in a commercial kitchen.

This course leads to employment opportunities in the hospitality industry in fine dining restaurants and commercial kitchens including specialist and commercial catering. Graduates may also progress to further study in hospitality management at degree level.

This programme aims to provide participants with an understanding of other disciplines within the construction industry with a focus predominately on the quantity surveying fields. It is hoped that this wider knowledge will be transferable within the wider construction industry promoting greater understanding between sectors and allow individuals greater career flexibility. The skills include establishing a design brief, preparing working drawings, understanding the context of working drawings, research and pricing of construction and associated work, and communicating with persons within the wider construction industry.
SIT currently provides a Diploma in Commerce course to students who are primarily intending to continue their studies at the University of Otago to complete the Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in accounting, marketing or management.
It is possible for students undertaking the Diploma in Commerce to apply for credit transfer on a paper-for-paper basis into the University of Otago Bachelor of Commerce degree. This allows the possibility for trainee accountants to study part-time at SIT for two years, whilst working, and then head to Dunedin to complete the Bachelor of Commerce degree.
SIT has received acreditation and approval from NZQA and the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) to offer our own Bachelor of Commerce degree, which will be available from the start of 2013. (Click through on the link for more information).

Mental health support workers work alongside people experiencing the effects of a mental illness. The main aim is to support the individual to regain skills of independent living.

The National Certificate in Travel (Level 4) recognises the skills and knowledge required in making and processing international travel arrangements that meet customer needs; including the ability to make computerised reservations for domestic land, water and air travel, and domestic and international accommodation. The course also covers dealing with difficult situations and customer complaints; applying calculations and data analysis; and presenting information orally to an audience.
The course includes distance learning theory and assessment, plus a 5-day block course covering theory and practical elements.
This is an industry based programme for licensed plumbers, and non-plumbers currently employed in sales, contract management roles, or technical positions with solar water heating systems, wishing to gain experience in the field of solar installation, design and management of solar water heating installation.

This course aims to:
Formerly "Carpentry Pre Trade", the Certificate in Construction course covers carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction skills. Every class builds a house from scratch, with practical sessions being alternated with classroom learning. Classes are 3 days per week and students are encouraged to seek work experience with an employer for the other 2 days. This course allows students to work through a lot of the theory units required for their building apprenticeship, which should help them get through their apprenticeship faster.
The programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further training in the clothing manufacturing sector. Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate, and develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the clothing manufacturing sector.
This qualification is a progression from the Certificate in Elementary Hair Design. It recognises people in the hairdressing industry who have demonstrated competence in the knowledge and skills required by industry. Holders of the qualification are able to consult and analyse with a client and give advice, provide detailed client records, provide basic client services such as midway colouring, clipper cutting, basic hair cutting, make informed decisions on what action needs to be taken and carry out that action in a professional manner, recommend home hair care products and how to take care of and style the hair and communicate with the client fully at all times.
The programme will allow students to begin to explore ideas through drawing and media, to recognise the design process, to use drawing to record development, to use a journal/workbook to help develop and extend ideas, to recognise some aspects of cultural practice (waiata, kawa, tikanga), to explore own whakapapa, to explore ideas through media, to identify basic techniques and begin to apply these to make work, to use a variety of media and techniques, to follow safe workshop practice, to present work under some direction and to practice basic time management.
Students are able to exit the Diploma in Sport and Recreation after successful completion of year one, graduating with this Certificate in Sport and Recreation.

This programme aims to increase the number of speakers in conversational Te Reo Máori across all generations. You will examine aspects of tikanga Máori through activities especially designed to encourage communication in Máori. These will include a combination of formal and informal situations such as Hui, Powhiri and Noho Marae.
The programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to initial employment, or further training in the audio industry, or for entry to the Bachelor of Audio Production. Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate, and develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the audio sector.

To produce students who demonstrate competence in numeracy, oracy, literacy and other personal and technical skills identified as important in the workplace. The programme will provide a basis for further study or entry level employment.
SIT works in conjunction with local service providers to provide quality trained staff to help service the farming, civil construction and road transport industries. Specifically its Automotive section is providing pre-trade training for potential diesel mechanics.
SIT are the only training provider in the South Island that is accredited to provide a specialised course in Automotive Heavy Trades by the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

This is an intensive programme looking at all of the areas of engineering and providing the entry skills for an apprenticeship in the engineering sector.
The Certificate in Introductory Plumbing and Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing is a full-time programme of 18 tutorial weeks.
It is an entry-level programme providing students with the skills and knowledge required for employment or further training in the Plumbing and Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing sectors and as an introduction for those interested in obtaining one or more of the Level 4 National Certificates in Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing.

This course will provide students with the practical skills required for making and designing floristry products such as hand-tied bouquets and posies, corsages, floral gifts, wristlets and buttonholes, and flower arrangements. It also covers important operational functions for providing floristry service in a retail environment including the conditioning and preparation of products, appropriateness for the occasion, handling and care, supplier and seasonal availability, toxicity/allergy characteristics, shelf life and price, and customer service skills.
