The programme contains the following unit standards:
US 4098 - Use standards to assess candidate performance (Level 4) 6 credits
People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare for and conduct assessment; complete assessment administration and review the assessment practice.
Application criteria: Candidates need to have access to someone qualified as a workplace assessor or an experienced tutor to observe them conducting an assessment.
Assessment: A portfolio will be submitted as evidence of the candidate planning for, conducting and reflecting on the administration of an assessment.
US 7091 - Establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults in New Zealand’s cultural setting (Level 4) 4 credits
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify diverse cultural needs in a New Zealand learning environment and establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults. This unit standard is for people wishing to teach or train adults in New Zealand.
Application criteria: Candidates must have access to adult students. Candidates consider how they can create a learning environment where adult students from a range of cultures have the opportunity to meet academic requirements.
Assessment: Four short assignments that require the candidate’s own views and examples that show that they have investigated other sources of information.
US 7093 - Design learning sessions for adults (Level 5) 6 credits
People credited with this unit standard are able to define learning outcomes for adult learning sessions, select learning session content, plan delivery processes of learning sessions, design assessment activities for learning sessions and plan a review of learning sessions.
Application criteria: Admittance to the programme.
Assessment: Three lesson plans including one for formative feedback in week eight, are required.
US 7097 - Facilitate interactive learning sessions for adult learners (Level 5) 10 credits
People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to facilitate, facilitate and review interactive learning sessions for adult learners.
Application criteria: Students must have access to a group of adult students and an appropriate observer.
Assessment: Assignments consist of three lesson plans. An analysis of each lesson plan is required. One lesson plan needs to be observed by a qualified and experienced adult instructor/trainer. An observation form must be filled out by the observer and signed by both parties. One lesson plan must be submitted for formative feedback.
US 7100 - Manage learning events for adult education and training (Level 5) 8 credits
At the completion of this unit candidates will be able to plan, organise and review learning events. This unit is relevant to staff within organisations for which the provision of adult education and training is the core business activity and to organisations where education and training support the core business activity.
Application criteria: Admittance to the programme.
Assessment: Two assignments are to be completed. Both involve the completion of a matrix relating to specific elements of a learning event that the candidate is either currently organising or one that has previously been organised. This unit also requires the completion of discussion boards.
US 7102 - Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical models of adult learning (Level 5) 6 credits
At the completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of at least three theories of adult learning and critically analyse the concept and application of learning styles within adult learning contexts.
Application criteria: Admittance to the programme.
Assessment: Two essays of 1500 words that require the candidate's own views and examples which show that they have investigated other sources of information.
US 11551 - Moderate assessment (Level 6) 8 credits
This unit standard is intended for use by experienced assessors who wish to extend their skills and knowledge of assessment. People credited with this unit are able to moderate assessment, verify assessment decisions and follow moderation administration requirements.
Application criteria: Candidates need access to a complete set of assessment material and three marked student scripts.
Assessment: Three assessments will be completed including pre and post-assessment moderation and a written summary of the moderation process within the candidates’ organisation.
US 11552 - Design and evaluate assessment materials (Level 5) 8 credits
Students who complete this unit standard are able to design and evaluate assessment materials.
Application criteria: Candidates need to have access to a moderator, preferably with US 11551 and/or US 4098 extensive training experience.
Assessment: Candidates will be designing assessment tasks and the accompanying assessment schedules for differing styles of assessment (short answer tests, practical observations, written assignments, case studies).
US 20469 - Evaluate adult learning sessions (Level 5) 5 credits
At the completion of this unit standard students are able to demonstrate knowledge of learning session evaluation aims and methods, prepare for the evaluation of adult learning sessions, implement and analyse learning session evaluations and review the evaluation process.
Application criteria: Experienced tutoring or teaching is required.
Assessment: Four assignments are to be completed that involve describing learning session evaluation aims and methods, preparing to evaluate adult learning sessions, analysing three learning session evaluations and reviewing evaluation tools.
US 26009 - Establish a culturally safe and inclusive multicultural learning environment for adults (Level 4) 3 credits
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify diverse cultural needs for a multicultural learning environment and establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults. This unit standard is for people wishing to teach or train adults in an environment outside New Zealand.
Application criteria: Candidates must have access to adult students. Candidates consider how they can create a learning environment where adult students from a range of cultures have the opportunity to meet academic requirements.
Assessment: Short assignments that require the candidates' own views and examples that show that they have investigated other sources of information.
