Course Outline

This is an industry based programme for licensed plumbers, and non-plumbers currently employed in sales, contract management roles, or technical positions with solar water heating systems, wishing to gain experience in the field of solar installation, design and management of solar water heating installation.

The achievement of the full National Certificate is restricted to Licensed Plumbers, however SIT in conjunction with the Solar Industry Association (SIA) may offer components of the National Certificate for non licensed plumbers.

Course Content

This course will allow students to:

  • Gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further  training in the specialist field of solar water heating installation and design and management of Solar Water Heating Installation
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognized by the industry sector as appropriate
  • Develop work habits encouraging good practice installation and management, of Solar Water Heating Installation
  • Install, test commission and maintain solar water heating systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge of solar water heating safety, system types and applications, regulatory compliance, and design
  • Select and specify solar hot water systems; and manage their installation and commissioning
  • They will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of the legal system in New Zealand and apply the law of contract to solar hot water heating installation situations

Further Accreditation
People holding a current plumbers licence as issued under the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006 may also wish to achieve the National Certificate in Solar Water Heating (Management, Selection and Specification) (Level 5) upon completion of Unit Standards 15757, 21884, and either of 25282 or 25288. 


For Registered and Craftsman Plumbers who do not hold units 21884 and 25282 / 25288 there is an RPL process (recognition of prior learning) for assessment of these units.

Application Criteria

Open entry.  Although the course is designed for plumbers, the course is also open to non-plumbers wishing to achieve unit standards appropriate for solar water heating system specification and installation management.  However, some unit standards covered in the course are not able to be awarded to non-licensed plumbers.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and be eligible for award of the qualification by application to NZQA or through their respective Industry Training Organisation, they must have successfully completed the requirements for all qualification unit standards, as specified in the programme schedule or National Qualification docuement.
