Bachelor of Information Technology - Nick Johnson

Nick made the move from Sydney to Invercargill, just to study at SIT.  He heard a radio host chatting about “Zero Fees” and how it is open for Australians.  The rest is history!

“I’ve been interested in computers since digital cassette tapes were the major permanent storage medium!  Within the Bachelor of Information Technology I am specialising in computer programming – creating web pages, application programmes, games, etc.  It’s great because you can create tools that help people – there is a big positive reinforcement in achieving what you set out to do.

“Through study I have gained a lot more knowledge in all areas – programming, networking, database programming, etc. Specifically, the programming side has introduced me to a number of technologies which I have been able to hone over the years.  The techniques I’ve learnt helped me in the final year project, which has given me valuable real industry experience working with a professional of 20 years IT experience.  The languages and other general technologies that I have gained knowledge in have been of great interest and include, but are not limited to, Pascal, Java, C#, Jade, Linux, XML, PHP, SQL, Object Oriented Concepts,  Network protocols, AJAX, JSON and so much more.  The best part has been the advanced programming papers with a solid grounding in algorithms, data structures and graph theory amongst other concepts.

“Study has honestly been enjoyable!  And for me a massive bonus is that I can travel while I study.  Invercargill is close to the ski fields, and snowboarding has become my favourite winter activity.

“SIT’s degree course has definitely prepared me for my future.  The tutors are really friendly and helpful.  Their knowledge is good, and the labs have everything you need.   I know where to find information, and the skills I’ve gained are really practical and applicable.  Next I will be looking to find a job as an entry level programmer. Ultimately I would like to own a business in programming.

“I would recommend this course to anyone interested in the IT field.  Study hard, and you will do well upon completion of the course.  It is a great opportunity to get a free education!”
