This programme aims to increase the number of speakers in conversational Te Reo Māori across all generations. You will examine aspects of tikanga Máori through activities especially designed to encourage communication in Māori. These will include a combination of formal and informal situations such as Hui, Powhiri and Noho Marae.

This programme aims to produce graduates with the ability to care for animals and employ safe working practices appropriate to the animal care sector, and to be competent in a wide range of animal care and handling skills.

This programme aims to produce students who demonstrate capability in applied arts skills, understanding of applied arts knowledge and applications of techniques to a range of applied arts and craft practices.

The programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to initial employment, or further training in the audio industry, or for entry to the Bachelor of Audio Production. Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate, and develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the audio sector.

Graduates of this programme will have the knowledge and skills required to enter the motor industry, and be able to employ safe working practices appropriate to the industry. Graduates will be competent in a wide range of relevant industry skills.

SIT works in conjunction with local service providers to provide quality trained staff to help service the farming, civil construction and road transport industries.  Specifically its automotive section is providing pre-trade training for potential diesel mechanics.

SIT is accredited to provide a specialised course in Automotive Heavy Trades by the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).  We are also accredited to conduct off-job training for diesel mechanics and hold a distance learning contract for the MITO, meaning SIT facilitates and assesses correspondence work for apprentices all around New Zealand.

During the Certificate in Automotive Heavy Trades course, students are placed with a recognised automotive heavy equipment repairer who will both delegate them various tasks and help SIT assess their progress.

This qualification is designed specifically to provide a progressive pathway for students to integrate into a wide range of trade-related occupations.  The qualification includes compulsory standards that focus on the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills that form the structural base of the qualification.  The range of skills and activities contained in the elective section provides an opportunity to develop a flexible approach to learning.  It provides a range of opportunities for structured workplace learning through work-based learning programmes.

This programme gives you seven of the eight papers you need for the well recognised national qualification NZIM Certificate in Management or NZIM Certificate in Small Business Management.

This is an ideal programme if you are preparing to enter/re-enter the workforce, seeking new employment opportunities or thinking of starting your own business. It also prepares you for further study towards more advanced business qualifications such as New Zealand Diploma in Business. Each programme comprises six or more papers when studying full time.

This programme in business administration will provide students with the skills demanded in today's dynamic business environment. The programme encompasses all aspects of information technology, communication and administrative systems. This programme will further enhance the experience you may already have in this area.

This programme in business administration will provide students with the skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further training in the business sector. The programme encompasses keyboarding skills, computer applications, communications and administrative systems.

This course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate at an entry level in the field of hospitality across a range of disciplines. It will allow students to gain the relevant industry licences that are required in the industry, such as a liquor licence and food safety certificate.

The programme will allow students to:

• Gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further training in the apparel design and patternmaking sector.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate.
• Develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the apparel design and patternmaking sector.

This course will provide students with the practical skills required for making and designing floristry products such as hand-tied bouquets and posies, corsages, floral gifts, wristlets and buttonholes, and flower arrangements.  It also covers important operational functions for providing floristry service in a retail environment including the conditioning and preparation of products, appropriateness for the occasion, handling and care, supplier and seasonal availability, toxicity/allergy characteristics, shelf life and price, and customer service skills.

The Certificate in Construction course covers carpentry theory, elementary construction skills, health and safety, drawing and practical construction skills.  Every class builds a house from scratch, with practical sessions being alternated with classroom learning.  Classes are 3 days per week and students are encouraged to seek work experience with an employer for the other 2 days.  This course allows students to work through a lot of the theory units required for their building apprenticeship, which should help them get through their apprenticeship faster.

This is an introductory certificate for people wishing to pursue employment and further training in the electrical and related industries.  It is the first stage of training leading to qualifications as an electrician, or in switchgear fitting, motor rewinding and repair, industrial measurement and control, electronic security and related trades. 

The aim of this programme is to produce students who can demonstrate competence in customer service, reception, salon support tasks, and elementary and selected complex hairdressing skills. It aims to prepare students for either work in a hairdressing salon, or further study and to develop a sound base for further training in hairdressing skills.

In addition to the National Certificate, each trainee will have the opportunity to gain the internationally recognised City and Guilds International qualifications (additional fee charged).

Following on from the National Certificate in Hospitality (Basic Cookery) Level 3, this Level 4 programme allows the enhancement and further development of students' culinary skills.

This certificate will equip students with a level of knowledge, skills and competence in music to provide a pathway to further education and training, and the skills to meet specific industry profiles for people entering the workforce as musicians or other members of the music industry.

The Certificate in Introductory Plumbing and Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing is a full-time programme of 18 tutorial weeks.

It is an entry-level programme providing students with the skills and knowledge required for employment or further training in the plumbing and gasfitting, drainlaying or roofing sectors and as an introduction for those interested in obtaining one or more of the Level 4 National Certificates in Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying or Roofing. 

The theoretical and practical skills taught in this qualification reflect the diverse range of skills required to work in the sector.

A career in joinery can offer job satisfaction with practical hands-on manufacturing. The Certificate in Joinery programme can provide a direct pathway into the joinery and furniture making industries.

SIT has a well-appointed training facility with some of the most modern equipment available. Students manufacture full-size, quality, practical projects throughout the duration of the programme and have the opportunity to use a wide range of traditional and advanced computer controlled machinery.

The programme will allow students to begin to explore ideas through drawing and media, to recognise the design process, to use drawing to record development, to use a journal/workbook to help develop and extend ideas, to recognise some aspects of cultural practice (waiata, kawa, tikanga), to explore own whakapapa, to explore ideas through media, to identify basic techniques and begin to apply these to make work, to use a variety of media and techniques, to follow safe workshop practice, to present work under some direction and to practice basic time management.

With massage therapy experiencing increasing popularity world wide, SIT offers a certificate in massage therapy to prepare students for the industry. The certificate programme is designed to provide skills and theoretical knowledge particularly for relaxation and basic sports massage.

This programme recognises the core knowledge and skills required to work as an assistant in professional practice in massage, and assists students to enter the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage.

This programme will allow students to gain the basic skills and knowledge required to succeed in the mechanical engineering or fabrication industries. This is an intensive programme looking at all of the areas of engineering and providing the entry skills for an apprenticeship in the engineering sector.

This qualification is designed for learners who wish to enter mental health and addiction support work, or who already work as paid or unpaid mental health and addiction support workers under supervision. People completing this qualification will meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health’s (2008) Let's get real framework at the essential level of performance.

This certificate has been designed to give you fundamental knowledge of the theoretical and practical components of contemporary music and sound engineering. The curriculum has been developed to level 2 unit standards in the following fields of study, music studies, music performance, performing arts technology, sound production and interpersonal communication.

This programme is designed for people wishing to begin employment and/or pursue further training in the Painting and Decorating industry. Unit standards towards the National Certificate in Painting (Level 3) are completed or introduced on this programme. Students who obtain employment can complete the units as part of an apprenticeship.

This NZQA unit standards programme is for anyone who is interested in beginning a career in working with people in the helping professions of social work, community work, youth work, counselling or iwi social services.

This is an industry based programme for licensed plumbers, and non-plumbers currently employed in sales, contract management roles, or technical positions with solar water heating systems, wishing to gain experience in the field of solar installation, design and management of solar water heating installation.

Students are able to exit the Diploma in Sport and Recreation after successful completion of year one, graduating with this Certificate in Sport and Recreation.

Two possible pathways are available: Sports Development / Personal Training, or Outdoor Leadership.

This fun and exciting programme is a foundation level of the Māori language which will introduce you to basic tikanga Māori and introductory conversational Māori.

This programme provides sound foundation knowledge, skills and awareness for working with children and young people with special needs.  This is highly relevant for people who are interested in working as teacher aides and in supportive and care giving roles for children and young people.

This programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working, or further training, in the technical computing sector.

The aim of this programme is to produce students who demonstrate competence in skills, knowledge and work habits, that are both directly relevant to working or further training in the travel industry and to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate. Students have access to in-house Galileo training.

The National Certificate in Travel (Level 4) recognises the skills and knowledge required in making and processing international travel arrangements that meet customer needs; including the ability to make computerised reservations for domestic land, water and air travel, and domestic and international accommodation. The course also covers dealing with difficult situations and customer complaints; applying calculations and data analysis; and presenting information orally to an audience.

This programme provides students with the theoretical and practical skills appropriate for entering employment in the animal health sector, or in preparation for further specialist study. The qualification will be awarded to students who have competence in a wide range of skills appropriate to work in a veterinary clinic.

This qualification is a progression from the Certificate in Elementary Hair Design.  It recognises people in the hairdressing industry who have demonstrated competence in the knowledge and skills required by industry. Holders of the qualification are able to consult and analyse with a client and give advice, provide detailed client records, provide basic client services such as midway colouring, clipper cutting, basic hair cutting, make informed decisions on what action needs to be taken and carry out that action in a professional manner, recommend home hair care products and how to take care of and style the hair and communicate with the client fully at all times.

It provides skills in hardware, software, word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and file management. The emphasis is on the practical application of technology in the workplace.

The programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further training in the computing sector, and develop work habits and practice appropriate for this.

This fun and exciting programme is a foundation level of the Māori language which will introduce you to basic tikanga Māori and introductory conversational Māori.

Landscape Design combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One purpose of landscape design is to blend houses or buildings into the natural surroundings. To work toward a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of design principles and plants.

This programme aims to provide students with the know-how to undertake a range of landscape design activities and associated operations within the horticultural sector at an entry tradesperson level.  It is comprised of two modules that include unit standards at Level 3 and Level 4. You will gain skills and knowledge that will prepare you for employment in the horticultural industry, specifically landscape design. 

This qualification is designed for learners who wish to enter mental health and addiction support work, or who already work as paid or unpaid mental health and addiction support workers under supervision. People completing this qualification will meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health’s (2008) Let's get real framework at the essential level of performance.

This programme would suit anyone who is passionate about cars and has some artistic flair. This pre employment programme with an emphasis on motorbody industry skills is intended to prepare people for an apprenticeship in the motorbody industry. Our training can lead to careers in panel beating, refinishing, coach building and restoration. The creative aspects of potential employment are custom car building, painting and air brushing. This programme is the industry standard, and employers offering apprenticeships prefer pre trade trained students.

This programme aims to produce graduates who understand and can apply the key components of exercise and fitness in a professional manner.

Students will gain a strong scientific understanding of fitness, coupled with the ability to apply this knowledge in the contexts of individual, local and national needs.  They will also gain expertise in issues relating to managing people, and fitness facilities.

This is a Blended Delivery programme, so students will do study both on line and through a series of workshops.  Workshops will be held at the SIT Christchurch campus (60 Waterloo Road, Hornby) and will run for 8 hours per day, plus an hour for lunch.  The workshops will allow students the opportunity to complete some assessment work in class.

This programme is designed for those wishing to enter the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. The units covered are designed to give practical and theory based skills in refrigeration, air conditioning and electrical work. Although the programme is a pre apprenticeship programme it also attracts more mature students who may wish to enter the industry as a technician. The successful students can gain a maximum of 20 credits towards the Certification of Refrigeration Engineer.

The programme will allow students to:

• Demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the industry sector as appropriate.
• Develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the tertiary teaching sector.

Learners in this programme will acquire a core of small business competencies and be able to recognise personal skills and apply business skills in areas relevant to the development of their own small business or within a small business that they are associated.

This programme is particularly designed for managers on all levels and team/project leaders who work with people and would like to improve both the team results and staff individual performance. This programme is also suitable for small/medium business owners who would like to accelerate positive changes in their companies - improving their business results, increasing market share etc.

This programme will provide students with a solid foundation of environmental and conservation management knowledge and information and an ability to apply those skills across a range of environmental management contexts.  The skills and knowledge gained are directly relevant to both historical and current environmental management issues.

To provide students with the skills and knowledge required for employment or further training in the health sector.  The theoretical and practical skills taught in this qualification reflect intermediate skills and knowledge required for further study or work in the sector.

The programme provides students with the skills and knowledge required for employment or further training in the health sciences sector.  It is an ideal starting point for students wishing to study Nursing, Midwifery or Therapeutic and Sports Massage.

Graduates will have the ability to undertake interior decor work to satisfy their personal needs, and/or plan careers or enter into further study in areas which specialise in Interior Décor.

The programme will allow students to:

This certificate will help students gain the skills and knowledge for working or further training in the sports training sector. The content gives athletes and coaches the knowledge to allow themselves and others to achieve their potential. The programme has a strong focus on sport psychology, nutrition and exercise prescription and finding out how the body becomes stronger, fitter and faster when stressed by exercise.

National Certificate in Hospitality (Level 3 & 4)

With massage therapies experiencing increasing popularity world wide, SIT's Certificate in Massage (Relaxation Massage) is designed to provide skills and theoretical knowledge particularly for relaxation and basic sports massage.

This programme recognises the core knowledge and skills required to work as an assistant in professional practice in massage, and qualifies students to enter the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage (Invercargill campus).

This programme aims to produce graduates who understand and are able to apply the key components of exercise and fitness, and demonstrate knowledge of national and local needs in the area of fitness and health. Students will learn to work professionally with all clients, showing sensitivity to their individual needs. Graduates will have a strong scientific understanding of fitness and will be able to apply this knowledge and manage themselves within the context of the fitness industry, with an awareness of the issues relating to managing people and facilities.

This is a Blended Delivery programme, so students will do study both on line and through a series of workshops.  Workshops will be held at the SIT Queenstown campus (Remarkables Park) and will run for 8 hours per day, plus an hour for lunch.  The workshops will allow students the opportunity to complete some assessment work in class.
