Course Outline

This programme aims to:

  • Provide international students with a broad base of technical business competence and skills necessary for those aspiring to middle management, supervisory positions or other business related role.
  • Assist international students to gain skills, knowledge and competence in the business environment to undertake a range of business activities.

Course Content

The course is made up of the following modules:

 

NDB5108 – Communication Skills 1 - 15 credits in total from the following unit standards:

Application Criteria: admittance to the programme

 

US 9691 – Demonstrate knowledge of group processes (Level 5) 5 credits 

People credited with this unit standard are able to: analyse the advantages and disadvantages of working in groups; explain group processes and their effect on group function; and outline strategies to manage conflict in a group.

 

US 21336 – Lead a group/team to achieve an objective(s) with some complexity (Level 5) 5 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: plan group/team activities, set goals and negotiate group/team process, and facilitate group/team process, to achieve an objective(s) with some complexity; and evaluate performance. This unit standard is for people who lead groups/teams regularly, perhaps on a daily basis. Such groups/teams may include but are not limited to work groups/teams.

 

US 9685 – Write an analytical report (Level 5) 5 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: select and organise information; write the introductory section(s), body, and summary of the report; and produce the report according to specified standard format.

US 25695 – Describe human resource management in organisations in New Zealand (Level 5) 10 credits 

This unit standard is intended as an overview of human resource management (HRM) specific to the NZ environment, and is intended for non-specialists or for specialist HRM people new to this environment. People credited with this unit are able to describe: human resource management and its place in organisations in NZ, the main functions of human resource management in organisations in NZ, and the impact of key legislation on human resource management practice in NZ.

 

US 8498 – Demonstrate and apply knowledge of managing conflict in the workplace (Level 5) 6 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to, in the workplace: demonstrate knowledge of conflict; monitor conflict situations; and develop and apply strategies to address conflict situations.

US 2931 - Produce operational marketing plans (Level 5) 10 credits 

This unit standard is for people who need, or seek, to define the direction and targets for annual marketing operations and for specific projects. People credited with this unit standard are able to complete situational analysis, establish objectives, produce action programmes, and define coordination and monitoring mechanisms for action programmes.

 

US 2950 – Produce and coordinate promotional strategies (Level 5) 5 credits

This unit standard is for people who have or seek responsibility for, or provide advice for, the promotion of products or services. People credited with this unit standard are able to identify the role of promotion in marketing and analyse the inter-relationships of the promotional mix; establish promotional objectives; select promotional strategies and elements appropriate to the marketing mix and coordinate promotional strategies.

This unit standard is for people who need to produce establishment plans for small business ventures. People credited with this unit standard are able to: explore and articulate business vision concepts; formulate and communicate an ethical framework for business operations; identify means of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation; and establish business goals and objectives and formulate strategic plans for specific small business ventures.

 

US 6410 – Manage financial resources for a small business enterprise (Level 5) 5 credits 

People credited with this unit standard are, for a small business enterprise, able to: develop financial strategies; implement financial strategies; monitor financial performance; and identify opportunities to improve financial performance.

 

US 6407 – Establish human resource needs of the small business operation (Level 5) 5 credits 

People credited with this unit standard are able to: assess human resource requirements to establish the business operation; identify potential sources of personnel; evaluate human resource management options; identify employment obligations and responsibilities; plan how work will be allocated and evaluated; and identify staff development needs and establish staff development policies.

US 11622 – Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of accounting and prepare financial statements for an entity (Level 4) 10 credits 

People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the nature of accounting and accounting concepts; explain and classify transactions according to their effect on the expanded accounting equation; and prepare financial statements for an entity.

 

US 11610 – Perform the accounting functions for accounts receivable (Level 4) 4 credits 

People credited with this unit standard are able to: analyse, classify, and record accounts receivable transactions in an accounting system; and reconcile records of, and report accounts receivable transactions.

 

US 11611 – Perform the accounting functions for accounts payable (Level 4) 4 credits 

People credited with this unit standard are able to: analyse, classify, and record accounts payable transactions in an accounting system; and reconcile records of, and report accounts payable transactions.

Application Criteria:  Admittance to the programme and Microsoft Excel software and basic skills.  You may also need to purchase an Excel reference text of your own choosing.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the role of management accounting; explain and apply the processes for controlling and allocating costs; prepare a variance report for a standard costing system; and apply short-term decision-making techniques in management accounting.

 

US 27643 – Apply spreadsheet features to present data to meet a brief (Level 4) 6 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to apply spread sheet features to present data to meet a brief. 

 

NDB5110 – International Marketing Project 1 - 15 credits in total from the following unit standards:

Application Criteria:  Admittance to the programme and for assessment purposes, access to a business that is looking at marketing a product overseas to work with as a project.

 

US26254 – Identify and assess impacts on international marketing opportunities for a New Zealand product or service (Level 5) 10 credits 

This unit standard is for people who need, or seek to conduct or provide, advice for marketing activities on an international basis, and require an understanding of the global business environment as it relates to international marketing. People credited with this unit standard are, for a New Zealand product or service, able to: identify and assess political, economic, sociocultural, and technological factors in markets that impact on international marketing opportunities; identify and assess geographic and demographic characteristics in markets that impact on international marketing opportunities; and assess the viability of international markets .

 

US25212 – Apply scope controls to a project (Level 4) 5 credits 

A project team member usually performs the functions required by this unit standard under direction of the project manager and working with other project team members. People credited with this unit standard are able to contribute to scope definition for a project, and apply project scope controls to a project. 

 

NDB5111 Business Operations and Communication - 13 credits in total from the following unit standards:

 

US19025 - Demonstrate and apply knowledge of quality assurance in a business operation (Level 4) 7 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain concepts, systems, and principles of quality and quality assurance; identify the quality assurance requirements for a business operation; and assess the quality assurance system of a business operation. 

 

US9704 - Manage interpersonal conflict (Level 4) 6 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and explain the issues of an interpersonal conflict; develop and implement strategies to manage the interpersonal conflict; and evaluate the strategy.

NDB5112 Organisational Strategy and Workplace Relationships  - 15 credits in total from the following unit standards:

 

US 9732 – Demonstrate knowledge of strategic management concepts for organisational planning and development (Level 5) 10 credits 

People credited with this standard are able to: describe the role of strategy and strategy formulation in organisational planning and development; identify and evaluate strategies for development of the organisation; and identify resources and capabilities of a specific organisation in relation to its external environment.

 

US1987 - Develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships (Level 5) 5 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships in accordance with organisational requirements.

People who have achieved this qualification have demonstrated the skills, knowledge, and competence to undertake a range of business activities, and to carry out specific roles within business.

At the completion of this programme you will be able to gain employment in business related roles, or continue with further study with our National Diploma in Business (Level 6).

Assessments

Assessments for this programme typically include essays, analytical business reports, question and answer assessments and practical assessments based on actual workplace experience. There are no exams for this programme.

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $$6.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus a non-refundable administration fee of $50.00 for each application processed, and the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Application Criteria

  • All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in business management and have academic attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme.  
  • A current CV and record of learning should be submitted with initial application form.
  • A minimum of 18 years of age, with a minimum of 4 years secondary education.
  • School leavers should have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in each of four subjects.
  • Open entry to applicants over 20 with appropriate experience and aptitude.
  • Admission may also be granted in special cases by the Programme Manager.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, must provide evidence of achieving an IELTS Academic English language test overall score of 5.5.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the programme and be eligible for the award of the qualification 'National Diploma in Business Level 5' they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved 120 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

The National Diploma will be awarded directly by NZQA on attainment of 120 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate's NZQA official record of learning.
