Course Outline

This programme would suit anyone who is passionate about cars and has some artistic flair. This pre employment programme with an emphasis on motorbody industry skills is intended to prepare people for an apprenticeship in the motorbody industry. Our training can lead to careers in panel beating, refinishing, coach building and restoration. The creative aspects of potential employment are custom car building, painting and air brushing. This programme is the industry standard, and employers offering apprenticeships prefer pre trade trained students.

Course Content

Core Compulsory

All the unit standards listed below are required

3856       Identify emergency procedures in the motor and related industries

21672    Demonstrate knowledge of new and emerging technology in the motor industry

21673    Demonstrate knowledge of maintaining stock security in the motor and related industries

21674    Demonstrate knowledge of terminology used in the motor industry

3877       Demonstrate knowledge of protecting vehicle electronics in the motor industry

229         Identify the general locations and functions of motor vehicle systems and main components

21869    Remove and replace road wheels in the motor industry

16113    Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in an automotive workshop

21669    Demonstrate knowledge of hand tools and workshop equipment for motor industry applications

21858    Demonstrate good work habits and perform safe work practices in the motor and related industries

21859    Select and use hand tools and workshop equipment for an automotive application

 

 

Core Elective

A minimum of 14 credits is required from the following unit standards

21671    Carry out general engineering tasks in the motor industry

21682    Demonstrate knowledge of an oxy-acetylene welding plant in the motor industry

21683    Demonstrate knowledge of MIG welding in the motor industry

21684    Use a MIG welding plant in the motor industry

21685    Use an oxy-acetylene welding plant in the motor industry

21714    Demonstrate knowledge of fastening systems used in the motor industry

 

 

Collision Repair Strand

A minimum of 30 credits is required from the following unit standards

21700    Store and use hazardous materials in the motor and related industries

21718    Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous materials used in the motor and related industries

21694    Mask a repair for priming; and prime, fill, and sand a repair in the motor body industry

21695    Repair minor panel damage, shrink, and metal finish a repair in the motor body industry

21696    Apply finish coats of paint to a complete panel in the motor body industry

21697    Demonstrate knowledge of repairing minor panel damage and shrinking a repair in the motor industry

21699    Prepare a painted surface and prepare bare metal for painting in the motor body industry

21702    Demonstrate knowledge of preparing a vehicle body surface for painting, and preparing bare metal

21703    Demonstrate knowledge of masking, and primers, and primer fillers in the motor body industry

21705    Demonstrate knowledge of fillers, and filling and sanding a repair in the motor body industry

21706    Use and maintain a suction feed spray gun in the motor body industry

21710    Fill and sand a repair in the motor body industry

21711    Demonstrate knowledge of colours and finish coats in the motor body industry

21712    Demonstrate knowledge of spray guns used in the motor body industry

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this programme, will have knowledge and skills required to participate in further training in the collision repair industry as an apprentice (many employers now express a desire for their apprentices to have completed a pre trade course of this nature). They will be competent in a range of relevant elementary industry skills which will enable them to immediately be productive within the industry whilst engaging in training.

Application Criteria

Minimum of three years secondary education. Minimum age of 16. Desire to work in the motor body industry.  Mature applicants welcome.

 

 

 

 

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the units comprising the programme they should have: Attended for not less than 80% of the timetabled class hours and other activities. Completed all practical and theory exercises. Completed all course work requirements. Met the assessment requirements and demonstrated competence in the assessed programme units.
