Course Outline

This programme is suitable for professionals working in areas of social development (teachers, trainers, consultants, HR professionals etc.) and /or social support services (social workers, nurses, therapists, etc.). It is also useful to those working in service industries with a strong client orientation (i.e. tourism and hospitality) who would like to develop their people skills and improve their interpersonal communication and client relationship skills.

Course Content

The programme is made up of the following papers:

 

DPC101 - Introduction to professional coaching (Level 6) 5 credits

Content in this paper includes coaching origins and history, coaching in today’s world, main coaching areas and outcomes, clients of coaching, and mentor coaching.

 

CBC102 - Coaching fundamentals (Level 5) 4 credits

On completion of this paper, learners will be able to: discuss how coaching can support the management of change, define coaching and recognise its key characteristics and principles, and describe how coaching differs from other development disciplines such as mentoring, consultancy and therapy.

 

DPC102 - Ethical framework of coaching (Level 6) 5 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be familiar with the ethical framework of coaching, recognise and understand areas of potential ethical conflict and how to deal with them, and avoid/eliminate/minimise the number of coaching situations where an ethical problem may appear.

 

CBC103 - Transactional and transformational coaching (Level 5) 3 Credits

On completion of this paper, learners will be able to: understand the preparation required to move out of one’s comfort zone and face change, understand the differences between transactional and transformational coaching and illustrate how they can be practically applied.

 

DPC103 - Coaching relationship (Level 6) 5 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will understand the importance of appropriate coach-coachee relationships, be able to specify the main characteristics of a psychological contract between coach and coachee, and recognise and manage the dynamics of coaching relationships with different parties.

 

DPC104 - Creating a coaching environment (Level 6) 5 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to recognize their own preferred coaching style and be able to adapt it according to their coachee´s needs, create a suitable environment for face-to-face coaching, provide coaching via telephone and other media, i.e. Internet, and make coaching challenging for a coachee to accelerate the desired change.

 

CBC105 - Core coaching competencies (Level 5) 8 Credits

The content of this paper includes: identification of core coaching competencies, coaching knowledge and attitude, and specific coaching skills.

 

DPC105 - Working on a coaching project (Level 6) 5 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to market their coaching service to a target audience, prepare, execute and evaluate the coaching projects they are involved in and successfully replicate the coaching project model for different coaching topics in different environments.

 

CBC106 - Essential coaching tools (Level 5) 8 Credits

This papers looks at a range of coaching tools including the coaching wheel, the Chinese menu principle and magical questions.

 

DPC106 - Advanced coaching tools (Level 6) 5 Credits

The following coaching tools are covered in this paper: Pleasure and Pain Principle, Logical Levels, Meta-programmes and Mental Maps, and Storytelling and Metaphors.

 

DPC107 - Managing your own coaching practice (Level 6) 7 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to: create their own vision, mission, values and strategy for their coaching business, start their own coaching practice or incorporate coaching services into their existing business, recognise and target their specific group of potential clients and understand their needs, and understand how to run and develop their coaching practice as a profitable business.

 

DPC111 - Life coaching (Level 6) 8 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to recognise how coaching can help them to be more effective managers, and understand whom they can coach.

 

DPC112 - Career coaching (Level 6) 8 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to describe career coaching and how it differs from career counselling, introduce the main career coaching areas and goals, recognise and practise some of the key career coaching assessment tools, and prepare an action plan for a career coaching case study.

 

DPC113 - Executive coaching (Level 6) 8 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to understand the principles and specifics of executive coaching, apply the main transactional and transformational coaching models in the corporate world, and recognise and assess potential problematic areas and find a suitable solution in order to be able to deal with executive coaching successfully.

 

DPC114 - SME coaching (Level 6) 8 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to recognize the specifics of SME coaching to business owners and skilled professionals, identify the key coaching issues for these specific groups of coaches, understand the coaching characteristics of work/life balance and provide coaching for different stages of business development (from start-up to exit). 

 

DPC121 - Becoming a Master Coach (Level 6) 8 Credits

On successful completion of this paper, learners will be able to recognise the difference between “doing coaching” and “becoming a professional coach”, set up their own development plans for a future coaching career, be able to find and evaluate sources for their continued training and development, use self-reflection, self-feedback and self-coaching for their own personal changes, and find out the key components of a great reputation in the coaching area and start to work on it, both on a regional and an international level.

Career Opportunities

Learners who complete the programme will have developed their own interpersonal relationship and client relationship. They will have skills to coach others in areas such as life, career and business.

This course complements study at degree or postgraduate level in areas such as business, human resources and management.

  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period.  Click HERE to download a Study Load Calculator (spreadsheet).
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake unless a transfer is requested (conditions apply; see FAQs).
  • Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

Assessments

Assessments for this programme typically include case studies and short essays, combining theory with practical application. There are also discussion board postings to complete.   There are no exams for this programme.

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $6.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus a non-refundable administration fee of $50.00 for each application processed, and the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Additional Information

All SIT2LRN courses require you to have a computer and internet access. Students are required to use their SIT webmail only for all SIT2LRN communications. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system. Once you have been accepted into a programme you will receive a Welcome Kit that includes information that you can use to familiarise yourself with our online Blackboard learning environment. From the intake start date you will have access to the online course materials to work through.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of an intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not emailed their facilitator or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of an intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fees Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Application Criteria

  • All applicants should demonstrate the likelihood of successful completion of the programme
  • Some previous management experience is highly recommended (2 years minimum). 
  • Previous training (certificate or diploma) in business is an advantage.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme and be eligible for the awarding of the qualification Diploma in Professional Coaching, they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved a total of 100 credits as specified in the programme schedule.
